Mbox2 - The one good thing about it!

Post by dfusion » Sat Sep 03, 2005 4:08 pm

Well, three good things..

1) You can now get 128 latency buffer setting on Mac/PC
2) Mic Pre's are 6db better than original Mbox
3) You can use Analog/Digital Inputs simultaneously for 4 active inputs

The bad news?

It still only runs Pro Tools LE 6.8, not Pro Tools LE 6.9 like the Digi 002. This may elude to the Mbox 2 being manufactured using M-Audio parts because the Mpowered version of Pro Tools only supports 6.8 as well and users are still waiting for 6.9 support.

That's 3 things...

My MBOX runs 6.9cs3 just fine.. Well I should rephrase that - my mbox runs on 6.9cs3 just as poorly as it did in other versions. That's interesting that there is a 6.8 - Digi went from 6.7 to 6.9 I thought.

Ahh! That's the mystery my friend!

Pro Tools LE for Mbox/Digi002 = 6.9.x

Pro Tools Mpowered = 6.8.x

Pro Tools LE for Mbox 2 = 6.8.1

it's no mystery - Digi has some weird convoluted plan in mind with the acquisition of Maudio and M-powered PT - The thing that puzzles me is that if they intended to make the maudio stuff the lite -version and digi 02/mbox the next level this new mbox2 w- 6.8 suggests that it is in fact making a separation between the mbox and the 002 where the mbox will become more like the mpowered platform gadget - and the 002 the LE one. Frankly I think the mbox was an ill conceived platform. The 002 is a far more superior device and a good starting point for anyone wanting to get serious about PT - I think the mbox hasn't been an easy item for them - super buggy, tons of compatibility issues... and a lot more poor slobs to provide outstandingly lousy customer support for.

Has anyone produced any top notch ready for prime time recordings in PTLE? I heard the Cake recorded their last album on a g4 running ptle but perhaps that is incorrect information.

The only real difference between the LE versions of protools, and the LE hardware vrs the pro stuff is the A/D D/A quality and the Clocking. After that you must consider other factors such as the recording space, the playback room, etc.

Almost forgot, just today (9-03-05) DIGI RELEASED THE STAND ALONE DRIVE FOR CORE AUDIO FOR TIGER.

Back in action with my old 001 and Live! Plus it's now fully multichannel/multiclient. Though it does disable deep sleep-again!
Lots of gear. :)
