Do they allow music in Chicago?

Post by ducktail » Tue Sep 13, 2005 8:47 pm

After a hellish year in Kentucky, land of toothless hillbillies, I'm moving to downtown Chicago. I figure it's going to be a great place to hone my B3/Rhodes/Clav chops, but hows the electronica scene? Any Live users there? I know squat about Chicago, so if there are any Livers there who'd like to give me some advice (on pretty much any Chicago topic), I'm all ears.

Thanks
Ducktail

PS. Why is it that the people who are most opposed to teaching evolution in schools are the best evidence for its existence?

i figure the home of House music should have something going on there. :)

I'm in Chicago.

I use Ableton.

I am interested in a session for some clav/rhodes/B3/etc.

Hit me up some time.

Check out some of my mixes so you can get a feel for the things I like.

Would love to hook up for a few sessions, see if we can churn out some tracks. I have practice space near Rosemont.

Sounds Great Jason! I think I'm going to go for a nice snobby highrise on the water, so I'm going to need advice on where to store all my extra keyboards, guitars, and cars! Contact me off the board at nerf@rogers.com.

Sounds like we got a bit in common. I played ska for years and had an industrial band called Stunt Chimps for Burgess Meredith. Here's the only link I could find to the old stuff.

I have less apalling stuff at;

http://www.brucemurphy.com/download.htm but it's as old as dirt too.

Enjoy, or barf, or whatever!

Try living in Kentucky for a year. This shit just rolls off my tongue. If you don't like smoking, horses and periodontal disease, I suggest you never drive south of Indy.

Actually, they had a Pipe Smoking Contest in Louisville last week. WTF? The first one to get cancer wins???

given Hunter S. Thompson was from Louisville that doesnt surprise me in the least. If they had fear and loathing contests I'd be in it for sure.

Blimey! Ottawa? Great place to live, bad place for music. There was a killer club scene there at one time with Clubs like Atomic and Illusion. The city got tired of wired ravers staggering onto the street at 11AM on Sunday and scaring the bluehaired tourists so they shut them down. Max Graham is from there, so he probably does the odd gig. There also used to be a place called the Well. I played there with DJ Sneak once, who really likes Ottawa. The Mercury Lounge was a very cool live/electronica venue. You'd do well there.

Forget music and take up skating and art appreciation :-) It ain't Montreal! Come down and visit me in Chicago!

Great to hear from you! There needs to be another Laptopalooza tour!

Jonny Depp, Hunter, Ali, Col Sanders; all got out as fast as they could. Thompson went so far as to have himself blasted into space to avoid proximity to Kentucky.

I'm in Chitown!

There's a few really good clubs in Bucktown with Abletoner's playing:

Lava Lounge

Four

Sometimes at Moonshine.

I'm more of a House / Techno Producer and DJ, but I'm starting some work with a Break's DJ who has a great Friday at Lava.

Check out: Purefuture.com for local shows and info.

The scene is growing and we have a strong group of Producers in town.

Thanks Tod!

If you don't mind, drop me a line at nerf@rogers.com. I'd really like to have a friend to get me hooked up with the community!

My Live sets are more House and techno as well. I thought I was pretty laid back, but Montrealbreaks and Rahlo tell me I'm harder than nails. Guess I need another martini.

I'm in Chicago as well and actually working on a new track with Tod that should be out on vinyl sometime in November. The scene is pretty good here. My friends and I have brought in Speedy J, Surgeon, and Marco Bailey this year and we've got some surprises lined up for Halloween and Thanksgiving Eve as well. I'm strictly Techno, but I'd say the biggest scene by far is House. I keep pushing Techno and will never give up hope, but this is the roots of House and it would probably take an act of God to dethrone it as the leading form of electronic music in this city.
