Presonus got back telling me the noise happens on some Ibooks (as I enquired about those specifically) , but no make/model specified ...

The noise should be adressable by not bus-powering and/or using balanced cables to the monitors ...

I contacted pre sonus, i was thinking the noise was coming through the monitors but actually is emanating from the firewire port on my power book, they said it is a problem with powerbooks, that some of them generate a high pitched sound (8khz apparently ?) and there is nothing they can do about it...

i wish the Presonus had worked.... it is so much smaller and cheaper. But with the Motu, I have the feeling that I can go on forever as long as FW is around....

I sent links to all the Firebox threads on this forum to the Presonus people. The hardware seems great, except for maybe the whining Firewire issue. It would be a shame for good hardware to fail because of crappy drivers. I am hoping that if enough people complain, they will do something about it.
As mentioned earlier, I wish MOTU or RME would come out with a simple, compact interface...2/4 ins & 4 outs, rock-solid drivers, top-notch D/A convertors, rugged chassis. I figure a lot of people are just like myself, and don't need a ton of I/O, or word-clock, or ADAT, etc....just a damn good simple interface for live performance.
Companies typically respond to consumer demand, or they go under.

You're right there - and as the problematic computers are already in the hand of users, it's in the users' problem.

Interestingly, I am at another location with a different powersupply at the high pitched noise has gone ? It didnt seem to make any difference if i used external power pack and just now i am bus powering it and no noise ? I dont have my monitors hooked up, just using headfones but cant see how that would make any difference seeing as the sound comes from the actual powerbook firewire port ?
