hey whats up I've got a few questions could you help me out?


1. Is it Possible to Get 10- 16 tracks out of the new 12"g4

2. what do you think about the tibook 15" 667? can you get 10-16 tracks out of this one? and is it worth a used price of $1200.

3. outside of Live, does video editing, and graphics programs like photoshop fly really fast on these two machines

4. and last but not least how would you compare an G3 ibook 12"800mhz
to the other two.

I have a TiBook 667 with 1GB RAM and the default 30 GB HD. I have an external FW SuperDesktop GB+ with a WD Jumbo 200 (8MB buffer).

I find that the performance for a song with 6-8 long audio tracks (ie. Live used as a tape recorder for acoustic performances, then used to do touch ups, redos, effects, etc.) is pretty good. You have to be careful not to overdo it with effects or else you will have to up your latency settings (or resample the effects into the track). I find the worst effects for performance are reverb effects, though Live's economy mode reverb is really quite good for the minimal performance hit. On 8 audio tracks, you want to figure a couple of send effects, and a couple of per-track effects.

I am not sure how it would scale up to 10-12 tracks at a time. I am guessing that if you were to be careful with your effects, and picky with which clips you put into high quality mode, and careful with your latency, and use a sampling rate of 44.1k, you can do fine: the demo songs that come with Live have sections that play up to 8-10 tracks at a time, and on my TiBook, they run well even at low latencies (5-8 with built-in sound, a little higher with my Motu 828).

oh yea, and so you think the 12"g4 would be capable of that also? what about the ibook 800mhz

No, not a per-track effect on every track. On my song that I am referencing from, I think I have one effect on track 1, one on track 2, one on track 3, and then all tracks 1-6 send to one or more of the three send effects.

I bet I could squeeze a little bit more out, but during live-in recording at this stage, I start to get near the wobble zone for the heard audio while recording.

IMHO, the G4 will perform much better than the G3 800Mhz... Although Live isn't Altivec enabled today, it well may be down the road.

The 12" G4, although lacking in L3 Cache, should perform pretty well with the faster ram, etc. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone yet who is using one, so can't ask around...

If you can afford a faster G4 TiBook (800Mhz+), or the 12" powerbook, I'm sure you'll get the performance you're after.
