pcmcia->sata adapters

Post by rozling » Tue Nov 01, 2005 1:18 pm

I'm getting rid of my desktop but keeping one of its nice fast sata HDs. I was thinking of hooking it up to my laptop via pcmcia with something like this as they're quoting 1.5Gbps transfer rates.

Anyone had any experience/joy/woe with these? I'm looking at using it for multitracking & streaming sample libraries

Looks really interresting!

How will you protect your former internal sata hd?
Can you get some kind of usb powered chassis? 8O

I'm not sure - the product info for these pcmcia cards all neatly sidestep the issue of power!

I'd definitely like to stay bus powered if possible. If I could get 12v from usb to a molex adapter I could use the molex->sata power cable from my desktop. I'll have to wait til tomorrow to do some proper googling on that - I'll post my findings if any.

As for enclosures, I hadn't really thought that far ahead. Maybe one of those aluminium bricks they use for cooling/quietening inside cases :?:

I'm presuming in all of this that the extra Gbps will make a difference in sample playback etc, maybe I'm just being hopeful though
