recording drums

Post by Guest » Thu Mar 13, 2003 12:59 am

hi, i'm new at this and have a fairly strange/basic question:

if you have an audio interface like motu 828 or 896, which has 8 channels line in and line out can you plug in each drum mic into the 8 inputs, line to the computer through firewire, and have each microphone record to a seperate channel in Logic or Reason...or maybe even Ableton?

example:

line 1 - Bass drum mic - record in channel 1
line 2 - Hihat - record in channel 2
....and so on

yep absolutely.... except in Reason, which can't record audio.

Bear in mind that the 828 can only amplify two microphones; need any more, and you'll have to get external preamps.
The 896 has mic pres on all channels as far as I recall. It's probably a better buy if you can afford it, anyways - due to the higher sample rates available.

Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

I record my Jazz trio into live using an 828. I run all mics through a Mackie board, dumping the line level outputs into the inputs of the 828.

I am running this on a 1Ghz Powerbook, 1GB ram, 10.2.4

Hi
If you have a propper console or event a home mixer (With mic pre-amps etc.) you don't need 8 channels of input - and you can use only the stereo out from the console to record.
I have a behringer 1202, and I've recorded drums with 4 mics via emi 2|6 into live. Works like a charm.
Have fun
