amen break

Any links to info for the amen BREAK? I have used it in a track, i usually almost always program my own beats with individual hits, but I made this one tune from this track and it is awesome. Is it really considered public domain, or is that an assumption? I would like to find out so I can see about getting clearance for it. THANKS!
