punch in/out problem

Hey everyone,
When recording using the 'live in' source as input, I am trying to use the punch in/out feature. If I just use punch in, there are no problems. However if I try to use punch in/out, or just punch out, the audio is muted on playback. I can see the waveform, so I know it's there, and if I grab and drag the waveform, even a little, it plays correctly. Moving it then puts it out of sync, however, so that solution will not work. Also, if I move the clip to a different track it plays. But that should not be necessary, nor do I have the time and patience to do this every time I punch in/out while recording. Any help?
