How hard would this be?

Post by Ambioun - Techno Man » Wed Dec 21, 2005 2:13 am

I need a 4 button footpedal board "midi button board" to play scenes in live performance while I play my bass. The problem is that the retail ones are about 400.

I just want a little box with 4 push buttons "like kills on fx pedals" for under $50. If there is one, refer me. If not, then how hard would it be to build one?

This is a pretty reasonable price for a solid piece of midi gear, imo.

My guess is that making one would cost you more than 400$, once you include a few screw-ups and the time spent.

400 for ((4)) buttons? Hell I will take an old keyboard and use that.

What about the Behringer FCB1010 for $150?

Well I might just make my own. I just don't want to pay more for stuff I'm not going to use. I'm never gonna use the pedals and other stuff. Just want 4 simple buttons.

you can get all sorts of used midi pedal boards for well under 100. just dig around ebay.
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

I second the FCB1010. You won't touch anything like it for the price, and you'll be amazed what useful things you'll be able to do with the other controls. MIDI CC control of Live is really useful, even if it's only for volume/EQ/etc.

If you know which end of the soldering iron to hold on to, then you can build a controller with those features VERY easily.
Use one of these:
http://www.ultimarc.com/ipacve.html plus four footpedal clicker-buttons. Should be doable for around 50$, depending on the quality of the switches you'll use.

The good thing about it is that it's pure USB, doesn't need power, and you can upgrade it to a full-on mega-pedal if you should feel like it later on.
mbp 2.66, osx 10.6.8, 8GB ram.

there is this too: http://www.xkeys.com/xkeys/xkswi.php
kind of expensive but very flexible.

Also, does it have to be a footpedal? I've had 'in the lab' success with a USB numpad, mapping it through Plogue Bidule. Seems like you could put it somewhere handy (maybe on the bass itself) to tap on.
