there's more hardcore BOAC experts who could tell you more, but from what i know, their sound is more a byproduct of the process which they use to obtain it.
a lot of printing stuff to tape and twisting from there onwards.
if you go to www.em411.com and search for boards of canada, you would find enough info on them to fill not one, but two encyclopedias.
