Point 4: What should happen if ALL business companies (Food, softwares, dresses..) reduce their product prices? SURELY a world disaster.
this does make some sence but then again software isnt nearly as important or real as food or clothing. if you are going to look at software like the average person then software is a service, a disposable service.
but like most of you i do not look at it this way i do see software like reason and live to be of great use and worth paying for...but you have to be out of your brain to think $399.00 is a good price for a disc with 25mb of information on it. like i said before games take alot more people money and time to make but the price of most games is not more than $50.00.
if music software was so expensive to make then we would have no free ware.

btw it is good to see that ableton lowered the price of upgrading from live lite to live 5 to $199.00.but i think this would be a good price for the boxed version more so than an upgrade. i also would like to see other companys do what fruity loops does, if you buy there software online you get every new version of there software for free, if you buy the box then an upgrade fee is around $60.00
this is much more of a realistic price. i wish all software makers could learn to give back a little more than what they do.
btw not only do you get the software when you buy fruity you also get 2gigs worth of samples, this is a very good value for people that love fruity loops. unfortunetly i grew to hate fl.

To go back to the original post...
I still cannot see why Ableton would crack their own programme. I see the argument that cracked software is good marketing, but I hardly think it's going to replace real products well marketed.
I reckon the people who use one piece of cracked software use 100 others too. Just be happy you don't need a friggin dongle to run Live...

Why would a company invest substantial time and money on a copy protection mechanism, and then invest further time and money to develop a crack for their own product?

I think we've covered this one.
because a large proportion of the kudos for crackers comes in being first, without that a large part of the impetus to crack is gone.
If Ableton release a 'crack' that appears to work for an extended amount of time, then they are much less likely to get 'really cracked'. Crackers move on to the next 'new release' of other software.
Metaphor Alert:
Imagine there are is a rough area of town, anytime a new person moves in they get burgled. So the smart new arrival fills their flat full of junk stereos and things. That is what gets stolen, stuff that brreaks down. The people who receive these stolen goods aren't in possesion of the true objects, they break.
So why would they do it:
1: it prevents other people 'really cracking' the software.
2: Users of the 'ableton crack' are redirected to a purchase after the 'crack demo' expires.
I don't actually think they cracked their own software, but I do think they probably left a bogus 'easy in' for crackers. Enough for crackers to think they had the job done and move on. Achieves the above objectives with less effort.
