Network Sync in OSX

Post by computo » Tue Mar 28, 2006 1:54 am

Has anyone had much luck with the network sync function in OSX's audiomidi prefs?

It seems like it should be sweet, but I cant seem to keep a connection for more than 30 seconds or so, and there's is no syncing with the clock.

Im not sure what Im doing wrong, the computers recognize each other, but the connection keeps closing, though they're hardwired with an ethernet cable.

I had similar difficulties with MIDI over ethernet on Tiger.

I'm now using two MIDI interfaces, which is OK as I've got MIDI devices on both Macs anyway. Sync was drifting and sometimes dropping off until I used two MIDI ports - one for sync, and the other for MIDI data.

Now it's perfect. Had it running for 5 hours without a hitch.

Hi
Dunno if it's relevant, but airport sync's been a blast. It took a bit of time to see eachother's computer and then the sync is tight. I did a 1h30 mn jam w/2 Powerbooks and midi stuff w/ NO sync problems. gotta check latency, specialy if you use other programs, like Reason...

I have synced a couple macs up via ethernet but can't seem to get them to connect via a computer-to-computer network with Airport. I always get a "connection refused" message. I have looked all over and can't seem to get a resolution.

Any suggestions?

I too have it working without any trouble. I'm not at home, so I'm doing this from memory. Have you turned on Personal File Sharing in Sharing Prefs? Can you connect one machine to the others via Command + K and entering the IP addresses directly? I believe that as long as the computers are talking to each other, and as long as you've properly set the "Who may connect to me" setting and checked the "Enable" box in Network MIDI, then Bonjour should allow the machines to find each other.

works perfect for me every time... either with Airport or direct ethernet...

What i'm using at the moment, is high quality Cat 5 cable (certified for Gigabit Ethernet cross over use), that cost me about 12 quid for 30 metres..
but i'm having excellent results with two machines over Airport, using a Belking G card in one, and an apple aiport on the other...

the only times i'm getting a dropped signal, is when one of the machines goes to sleep while i'm trying something particularly fiddly..

So, do you guys get a high cpu use just from syncing on the slave computer?

Something isnt right here.

the connection is made, but the clock on the slave just keeps bouncing back to 1, only making it to about beat 2, and then returning. Its a cool effect, but not what I want.

Anybody? anybody?

I dunno what exactly is making your situation the way it is?
My scenario is usually Logic and Live synced via ethernet with a Lynksys router, no problems, Live to live works too, but I avoid that just to stay honest with the Ableton's.

Do i need a router?

I should be able to link these computers directly, with nothing but an ethernet cable...

I wish there was somewhere that I could get a straight answer, or a tutorial, or troubleshooting guide.

You need a cross over cable if you are doing it without a router.

But start with the basics first: Have you gotten the two machines talking to each other? Can you share files, send pings, whatever? Once you got that stable you can try getting midi to work.

why wont a simple ethernet cable work?

they are definetly communicating, the slave just acts funky, and keeps resetting to beat 1, only making to abuot beat 2, before restarting, to the clock.

Its really wierd, the slave is recieving MIDI, its just acting really wierd.
