WTF?
Manufacturers struggling with complexities of modern computer systems is one thing, but being too dumb to apply thermal paste correctly looks pretty ... moronic?
I've had my share of trouble with a first gen iMac G5, I'm really glad I could control my wallet to sit this first generation out. Keep it coming though, very interesting posts so far.

gomi,
Funny you found that thing on somethingawful.com, I usually associate lots of furry bashing and Jeff K with that site.

it isn't exactly apple but the people who are putting this shit together. whoever is in charge of operations needs to fucking get their asses kicked.

anyways, my macbook isn't TOO HOT. there have been times where it was actually too hot, but rarely.

i'm going to start paying attentiont to this more. if i notice anything too the extreme you betch your ass i'll be in that apple store exchanging it.

oooh the joys of being early adopters.

Anybody in the LA area want to re-apply some thermal paste for me :) (The repressed high school geek inside is smiling...wait no, that's me me now as well...)

interestingly, no one is putting any more thermal paste on the macbooks then on any of the last 5 models of powerbook. all the photos i've seen about this show the macbook having the same amount of paste as every other aluminum powerbook.

After carefull consideration I just tried this fix and my 2G Macbook is now a silent speed freek. I'm now getting a max of 28% running the Live 5 performance test (down from 38% before the fix). The Best news is that the whine seems permenantly gone.

It does seem to take a lot longer to boot but it's well worth it (I'm not concerned with loosing battery life). Great work. Thanks.javascript:emoticon(':D')

after doing this i ran DualCoreTemp ( a little util )

and the machine sat at 79-85 degrees C constantly with the cpu
sitting at 2000mhz at all times.

with the stepping put back to normal, it would sit idle at a lower speed
at at 29-35 Degrees C...

you decide if cooking your book is worth the speed jump that live 6 is going to
give you in a month anyways.
