i know you meant it tongue in cheek, but i think i'll go with the OS i've been using for the last 14 years and hundreds of millions of people usenoisetonepause wrote:Why not try a real OS instead?

i'm gonna try it in parallels on my mbp.
no use in wasting a real parition on something i already know
is just eye candy and broken features.
should be interesting.
I'm not going to upgrade to vista until I know for sure every intrusive DRM feature has been hacked into oblivion, I've allways been about a year behind all new windows versions anyway.
Would also be interesting to know how much of all that eyecandy crap you can turn of, no fading, no flipping, no shades, no rounded corners, no auto updating icons, no UI elements that changes according to use, no menus with icons, give me windows classic look any day, windows reached UI perfection at NT4.0 imo.

Yes, but I can (And do) choose to not use it, I stay away from closed propriatary fileformats, anything using any kind of DRM will not get my money, and I use OSS for everything I can.
Been awhile since I read up about what's going on in vista, but there was a lot of talk about things like graphics cards must have special secured outputs so you can't copy from it, or it would not be allowed to run 'trusted' which would mean it couldnt be used in programs enforcing that etc.. lots of invasive restrictions on how and what you can use your own PC for.
As I remember reading, it's all in there, just not activated, then they wait for most people to switch over so everyone is nicely vendor locked-in, and when that time comes a 'service pack' that has something that a lot of people would need could activate small parts of it, one by one (using good ol' boiling frog syndrome) and then you'r slowly more and more screwed.
They wont release vista with it activated of course as that would cause an immidate outcry, it will be slowly fased in.
It remains to be seen how bad it will become.

there should be a mode of operation in some OS, which would basically stop 'everything' and completely devote all its energy into running a single way..
i went from windows 95, to windows XP ...when I saw the spec of the laptop I was salivating, imagining what kind of performance I'd get. Then powered it up and realised [a] XP sucks alot of juice just being on laptops 'bottleneck' performance due to heat/battery issues.
so ya...just a mode for stripping all the bullshit away, and just zoning into whatever apps you need to run this way.
fuck widgets.
i havent even looked for any useful ones, and please dont tell me about any
