or just run one PC computer and spend 5 minutes of your life installing antivirus software.dysanfel wrote:Yeah buy 2 PCs, one to surf and one to do audio. Or, just get one Mac. Macs suddenly seem cheaper.matias wrote:here's a tip,

This whole 'keep your pc offline' stuff is just uninformed, and incorrect.

Cant you sandbox your pcs?

Norton and McAfee are worse than the viruses they supposedly protect against. There's better alternatives out there, and some are even free.Guest wrote:or you can pay $70 for norton anti-virus, surf at ease, have no problems with your system (i haven't even done the updates and don't have a reason to).
If you've ever had anything Norton or McAfee on your system, run- don't walk- to their respective websites and go digging for the tool that removes all of it. Both of them are absolute death to any machine used for audio.
Macs are definitely being targeted more for various exploits; in fact, Apple even recommends to run an antivirus these days.I understand that mac users hate windows and jump on ANY opportunity to dis it (probably 'cause your bitter that Live works SO much better on a pc), but the fact is that many of us have no problems, we just optimize things for audio, and use the proper anti-virus stuff--its not rocket science, its actually easy, and I've had no problems, just fun. to each his own, but wholesale slagging of xp as crap, when it actually works quite well for me and others, is just a bunch of bickering and bitter bs. I bet even macs get viruses and need firewalls and protection when their on the web, don't act like macs are ablove all that.

Re: Viruses suck
I like my mac. PC's have their uses and can be just as productive, but it requires some more maintenance and care. Personally, I find that antivirus software slows your machine down. Like it or not, PC users are by far the most likely to suffer from viruses. If I used a PC as a main machine these days, I'd use this approach:
1 - Keep all documents and files on a separate hard drive. Keep only the OS files and applications on the system drive.
2 - Create periodic backups of your system drive.
3 - Do a clean install once every couple of months whether you're having problems or not.
Oh and yes, viruses suck!

too bad thats not a virus.
it's a trojan that was distro'd inside of pirated software.
thats nothing new, those have always been around.
darwin strikes again.
wake me when there is a virus that doesn't require me to actually run an installer and
give it my root password.
thanks.
