Is anyone who is using one of the
newer P4 based windows laptops using
a built-in SPDIF port for sound output?
(via DirectX, I guess?) This seems
like a good portable solution, in conjunction with
good, inexpensive portable D/A converter.
(At $250 MSRP, the tube-based ART DI/O
looks really nice!) This solution
(based on the AC97 protocol) is built into
the motherboard in such cases. Perhaps
the idea of a 'soundcard' will pass into
the sort of relative obscurity reserved
for coupled-earpiece modems. (Modem is probably
a good analogy.)
