I'm waiting for ours to do the same...might be worth opening up and moving the potential culprit...the wire near the heat sink that causes a short when the heat sink expands. This seems to be the cause of the issue if you read all the boards. I would venture to guess that if you want to void your warranty you may be able to fix it by simply making sure the wire does not melt and short things out by moving it inside the machine.

All things considered

Certainly hope that it wasn't during a gig?

Sitting by the sidelines myself, and the more I wait for that magical 17" MacBook to come with the specs I want (they are prepping a new gen as we speak, this should be no secret to anyone), the more I am thinking that for the time being, a Core 2 Duo PC laptop might not be such a bad thing after all.....

After the 2nd gen MacBooks have been out for a while (Say... April 2007) and it is proven that they are working, then I can always sell the PC and move back to a Mac.
stay groovy!

I did and it's fine (touch wood). Still, random shutdowns on any new unit is absolutely unacceptable and I really feel for the unlucky ones.

This info is new to me. Where did you find it?

Glad you found it Robert. In fact, wasn't it a German scientist who uncovered this issue? It seems Apple is replacing heat sinks now so it is possible that the heat sink itself is defective which causes it to react this way but if you can do a temp work-around until Apple has a 5 minute fix (as opposed to a 2 week fix) then it might save some hassle.

welcome to intel

intel cpu's can heat up easily and reboot just as easily when they overheat.

not putting heatsinks on properly, or inadequate spread of thermal paste and whatnot along with a poor ventilation design does not fare well with intel notebooks.

i feel your pain robert.

mine is in the shop for the exact same problem.

...as well as a pinched video cable and stained faceplate. the 'mooing' i took care of myself.

i am going to get my money back and get a MBP they ahve a lot les issues and are on gen 3 now according to the mac tech guys at m shoppe.

i've got to go on tour again in a week and a half. i really hope they fix it so i don't have to rent a computer.

grrrr....

I hope it didn't shut down during a gig!

Just why I'm waiting for the 2nd gen Mac Pro Workstations. I'd never buy a first-gen anything, unless they want to pay me for hardware beta testing!
