MacBook Pro stupid FW qsuestion

Post by GaryTracks » Sat Oct 07, 2006 6:53 pm

you know i want one!

but, how are you connecting your soundcard and your hard drive, when there is only one FW port?

and is there any drop in performance when downgrading hard drive connection from FW800 to 400?

1, Cos FireWire supports 'Daisy-Chaining', you will have to have two firewire ports on one of the devices though. I daisy chain my HardDrive and soundCard together. The sound card has 2 FireWire Sockets (1 connected to the computer and one connected to the HardDrive). Works fine!

2, The speed drops from 800 Mbps to 400 Mbps, I doubt your hard drive transfer speed will be more than 400 Mbps. 400 Mbps should be more than enough bandwidth for a HardDrive AND high quality, multi-channel sound card.

I run a Lacie FW800.

So everyone's daisy-chaining their soundcards and hard drives with no issues. that's cool.

I imagine you would plug the sound card into the hard drive and the hard drive into the MAC, yeah?

Nah, My LaCie drive only has one FW socket, but my soundcard has two, so the HDD is at the end of the chain. I have NO problems with anything Including latency. FireWire is a pretty advanced technology, it doesn't need the processor to manage it like USB does.

I don't where people get this idea of 'issues' with daisy chaining FW devices, FireWire basically has a number of channels that data can be sent down.

Have a look at this site, it has some interesting facts. FireWire is MUCH faster at doing tasks than USB2 - even though USB2 operates at a faster clock speed!

Yeah, putting your HD at the end of the chain is the best way to do it so you can unplug the HD and take it with you without having to unplug the soundcard.
