MacBooks have core duo's which have 2 processing cores in one chip. Its like having 2 single core processors, but on one peice of silicone.
The duo bit in the name means dual processing cores on one chip, so the newer Core 2 Duo still have 2 processing cores, but this time they are 64 bit processors (powerful). The Core 2 Quad has 4 processing cores (64bit) = VERY powerful!

Macbooks currently use "Yonah" processors (Core Duo).
Soon (hopefully between now and Xmas) they will install the new "Merom" processors (Core 2 Duo - 64-Bit), which i'm waiting for (usually a bad idea to wait for things like this, but this is an exception I believe). Apparently Apple have completed development a while ago on the new processor update, they just have to decide when they want to release it.
I might even hold out for the third update - the "Yeti".
