christopher willits uses ableton live...

Post by dm » Tue Oct 17, 2006 5:36 pm

i was really happy to hear his comments regarding ableton live as he's one of my favourite artists!

Much has been made of your custom-made software in the past when talking about your music. Can you tell us a little bit about it? Is it based on Max/MSP?

It’s based in Max/MSP, but I have new setup recently. I'm now making plugins using Max and using those in Ableton Live. So, the bones of the sync system are now in Live and funky processing, folding, cutting, strange sample mapping, and whatever else happens in these plugins that run in sync with it all.

Have you found Ableton to be a better tool than Max—or is it apples and oranges?

Yeah, they are very, very different tools to me. Max is my favorite tool for making my own processing systems and customizing things—and Ableton is great for live sequencing. But I don't even compare in terms of what is better, because they complement each other so much in what I do.

I posted this same quote a week or so ago. :)

It was buried in about 12 hours!

Just goes to show how much traffic this board generates.

dunno about that!
next to Keiichi Sugimoto, Christopher Willits would be my favourite guitarist

so it sounds like he is making pluggos, rather than entire max/msp systems now?

oops, should've done a search.
keiichi sugimoto is great (also uses live to an extent), his new fourcolor material is sounding interesting too, quite beaty this time.

yeah, here i was hoping this was another thread about BT, and instead it's about chris W. what a waste.

as for the interview, doesn't sound like he really makes too much use of live. i'm also not sure what his bespoke max plugs really get him that isn't available via various reaktor fx or glitch or whatever. but i like what he does.

The sync engine, the immediacy of use, and the straight-forward plugin hosting and such, I reckon.

I duuno, the looping/glitching sounds a lot more intricate than anything I've heard done with Reaktor/Glitch (well, glitch doesn't really loop, but you know what I mean).

what i find weird about his stuff is sometimes the clicking sounds like deliberate rhythmic effect, other times pretty much just static. that may be the point, but it makes me wonder if he does different things live than on recordings.
