Which should I go for NI FM8 & NI MASSIVE?

Post by SubLik » Wed Oct 18, 2006 8:52 pm

I want to make pop. Although I dabble in DnB, Hiphop & Electronica aswell. I'm trying to streamline my software to be more productive. My FX plugins are sorted . Just deciding on a new synth...........

The new Native Instruments FM8 or Massive synths look pretty good. I would like one that I could preferably learn to master & use for leads, bass, pads, etc.

I know they both can do this but what it the difference between them?

What difference in sound does FM create compared to Classic Analogue style synth?

Any advantages, disadvantages?

Much Appreciated,

do a little research into NI's customer relations before you choose any of them

if you are going to spend money on NI software I too would just go with reaktor and be done with it. There are many "wacky" and odd synths in Reaktor but there are also so many good bread and butter synths that you just cant go wrong. It is money very well spent.

The thing about NI synths is they're awesome and have all these awesome sounds and sound really really awesome

and there is really is no buts...

however, what about freeware synths or things like Zebra or something

but on the subject of NI - I found all of their synths (specially the ones that came with REAKTOR) a wee bit hard to program (or reverse engineer) back to the basics --> so I could program my own

but if I were you I'd go with MASSIVE - FM7 was hard to program from scratch, MASSIVE included with REAKTOR was a little easier to reverse engineer

MASSIVE DAWG, MASSIVE - but look into the free stuff as well

I'm feeling the KARMAFX right now though and something else I'm using for free right now (I can't remember though, you know how it is playa - hella synths and shit)

but anywayz

peace

Is Reaktor easy to use once you know how?

I've used Karma Synth & liked it, but in some ways I don't want TOO MUCH FLEXIBILTY as it gives me too much choice & makes me LESS PRODUCTIVE!!

I'm fed up with free-synths although they can be pretty damn good.

DJADONIS206, you think Massive then?

How is Reaktor to use?

Any MORE advice, anyone?

To make the decision a bit harder...

At first I think Reaktor is great, but for streamlining your setup and being
more productiv, its perhaps the worst option at all, because it s like having
manymany many Synths... interseting but steals yous Time.

Have you thought about for example Minimonsta from Ohmforce?
Less expensive and nice "analog" Sounds

or

Korg Legacy Bundle:
Suits Popmusic Perhaps better, three classic Synths: MS 20 for dirty Analog,
Pro 53 for bread and Butter and Wavestation for digital Sounds, f.e. Pads
it s much cheaper, you should get it for around 200, not such a cpu-eater
like Reaktor AND for the 200 you get also the sweet MS20 Controller, for
extrafun for tweaking...

just a thought

and if KARMA is to much flexibility/options for you - You ll HATE Reaktor

(which is great, but more for People who think KARMA is not complex enough by far)

Why are you fixating on just two NI synths in this choice, when there are many other options. I like FM7, but it's not a do-it-all synth. I would get Zebra2 before anything else, personally.

ya zebra 2 might be a compromize between the new NI stuff and reaktor. As for reaktor being a bitch, it can be. It is all in how you use it though. Take a few days to find the synths that you like to use and use them. Done. If and when you need a special tool just look in the user library and chances are you will find it. It has saved me time here and there just because I just go the the library for and find what im looking for. This only works if you understand the way synths work though.

+1 for this. Personally, I'm never buying an NI product ever again after the debacle that was the bug-ridden Absynth 3. So much potential wasted, and they didn't care to fix it. They promised a fix was coming for ages (over a year), and then all of a sudden were like "lookee here, buy the new fantastic Absynth 4 instead!" The cads.

You should at least wait and read other user reports on their forums re. the new products before you buy. Man, just thinking about that company makes me mad...
