Layering Drums!

Post by carbonform » Fri Nov 03, 2006 7:43 am

Hey folks, how does one go about layering drums/samples within Live? ive only been using this DAW for a little over a month and ive been learning quite rapidly, but one of my favorite processes (layering) still remains somewhat of a mystery to me. So whats the technique you have found to get the job done best for you? (Within Live of course). Thanks! :)

you using live 6 or 5? you using looped beats or are you actually sequencing drum hits in impulse or something of the sort?
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

Ah thanks for the quick response...Johnisfaster i am using live 6 (no sampler yet) :) I make all my breaks from single hits or loops that have been chopped to my liking. 8)

Do what I did - make a rack of layered Simplers. It works awesome, and gives more flexibility than Impulse (though admittedly I've never tried the "layering Impulses" thing).

If you like layering one-shots and then treating them, this is the way to go imho. My rack has two for Kick and three for Snares (whichare the only pieces I layer).

I'd gladly put my drum rack up...but alas, I know not how.

assign clips to midi notes, group similar sounding drums together, kicks on the left, snares in the middle, percussion on the right, hi-hats on the black keys (that's where I like 'em). Then play drum patterns by mashing on more than one key at a time, ABUSE your keyboard, PLAY it, HIT IT!!

I've been using filelodge.com, find threads with file links, hit properties on the link and see what others are using, same for images.

Excellent, thanks! I registered and uploaded my rack, I'm gonna start a thread to see if I did it right.
