MIDI Synthesis Question

My life has finally allowed me the opportunity to sink my teeth into Live, and to drill myself I'm trying to basically replicate one of my favorite songs. Note for note, I have it down, but I'm running into issues with accuracy in the actual synthesis of the instruments. Apparently the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth doesn't really cut it.

As much reading as I've done, I feel like I have a gap in my knowledge regarding the whole MIDI synth concept. What could reasonably replace the built-into-Windows synth? Is this the point where I should be considering something like Operator?

live will load vsti's (and AU synths if you're on mac).
