[OT] Ableton Live mountain bikers of the world unite...

Post by hambone1 » Thu Dec 21, 2006 9:48 am

Any fellow mountain bikers out there? It's my Great Escape from this sometimes (often) fucked-up world... iPod at full volume, tearing down a forest trail, trying to avoid hitting trees and walkers on my Santa Cruz Superlight...

It's cheap (once you buy a bike), legal, reduces stress, pumps up the endorphins, and other than breaking my wrist (don't clip in until until you're really good at unclipping) and wrenching my back (don't downhill balls-to-the-wall until someone teaches you how to fall), it's healthy!

Hey, it's me again ! :) Yeah, I ride year round, great way to get out of the studio. Just got a Specialized Enduro Elite last year, awesome bike. Spent most of this summer digging doubles at various spots near me, and a fun little ladder/drop park too. Can't wait til I move to Seattle, I'll be so much closer to Whistler finally!

Down the supermarket six months ago, they were selling assemble-it-yourself Chinese "mountain bikes" in boxes for NZ$130 (USD$90!) How could I resist? 18 Speed twist grips, Shimano components. Holding up well so far.

I like riding the 2km beach that's round my way. Just above the waterline at sunset where the sand is hard enough. Perfectly smooth, fresh air, just go.....

The bike'll probably fall apart after about 2 years with all the salt, but for 130 bucks I'm not complaining!!

Good to see you around these parts again Bone! There's always a biking holiday tour guide for you down here, ya know.

:D :D :D

Aye, I'm with you there on that one Hambone1. Used to hit the Alps every weekend when I was in Munich. Now in Berlin and it's tarmac action for my Klein Adroit Custom, but better than nothing and agree 100% on the benefits.

Though cycling in traffic with an iPod is not an option, so my current strategy is stick on Trentemoller's "Take me into your skin" at full blast while getting ready at home and then hit the paved roads fired up! Works a treat.

What's on the iPod when you're screaming downhill?

I lived in Frankfurt for a year. Superb mountain biking in the Taunus mountains, and fantastic, safe cross-city bike routes. Perhaps if England had been bombed into oblivion, it would have been rebuilt in a bike-friendly manner!

I'm not worried about cycling in traffic with my iPod blaring. I don't want to hear the car that hits me... Honestly, as long as I'm on my side of the edge of the road, there's not a whole lot I can do about it whether I hear it or not. I only use roads to get to the trails, anyway.

The only thing I hear on scary downhills is my heart thumping in my ears! It's really flat where I live now, so not too much downhill action to be had. I did the Black Mountains in Wales last year. Great downhills, some of them on soft peat that doesn't hurt so much if... err... WHEN you fall!

Heh, yeah, Welsh peat and Scottish heather are great cushions. Ever done one of the prepared trails like Coed y Brenin? Wasn't a fan till I actually tried it and it makes a big difference when you know you can blast round blind corners knowing there's not a Landrover coming the other way or ramblers obliviously consulting their maps in the middle of the road. Worth a spin anyway...

I live in Florida, USA..not exactly the mountain biking capital of the world, but I try to do some cross country riding when I can. Used to be into freeride and trials, but I'm getting too old for that 8)

Agree with comments about Coed-y-Brenin, absolutely superb place, get there whenever I can. Often do the Marin trail in Betsw-y-Coed as well, cos it's just that bit closer to Manchester...

...but luckily sometimes I get to work in Edinburgh, so there's nothing better I like in the summer than Glentress on my Trance 2...

the yorkshire dales are meant to be good (and close to manchester) aren't they?

another rider here... primarily I'm a rock climber really, if I had to choose only one hobby that would be it! nothing comes close to it for escaping the world of work, having an awesome time and coming back refreshed. Having said that I have just bought a bike for something to do when it rains ;) there's lots of man made singletrack round these parts :D

that too. however I find it hard to use live if I'm already computer-frazzled. live is for when I don't have so much work on!

WOOT!
but I've turned more roadie  (no spandex though!) since I live in the inner city (San Francisco). I picked up a Marin Point Reyes, it's a 'new' style of bike. Where cyclocross bikes are roadie bikes that can hit dirt, this is a Mt Bike that can fit 700C wheels on them as well as short rims with fat mt bike tires. It has dual disc brakes, so I can run different rim sizes on the same frame. I think Specialised is the only other company making them in that style.

Most of my rides are around SF, not a bad town to bike in if you know how to get around the hills. I still need to get a rack for my little car to get up into Marin, I am truly a dirt clod at heart, used to do some observed trials too.

Yup! Used to be in London, UK and rode the North Downs a lot. Few friends in Edinburgh so the odd trip to Glentress was cool too. Rode Cwn Carn in Wales as well.

In fact, its the main reason I moved to Vancouver for a year! Its pretty rainy and snowy right now but just itching to get out on the North Shore and head up to Whistler in the summer. I love it up there! Any Vancouver Ableton riders fancy showing me around the local trails?!

Love biking all round really. Back in the UK I have a road bike, crappy commuting bike, BMX and my lovely hardtail MTB. Just got the MTB over here with me although its a little XCish for the stuff I want to ride out here. Now saving up for one of these beauties for the summer:
