Waves SSL 4000 plugins VS Focusrite Liquid Mix

Post by Contra » Thu Dec 21, 2006 5:22 pm

who's an owner of both or one or the other?
which is your pick.

I honestly am a junkie for the SSL sound ever since using one of the G consoles(not sure which one)

im really wanting the Stereo Master Buss Compressor.
but does the Liquid Mix offer the same "audio glue" in imitation form?

i know focusrite says that there is upgrades to the EQ/Compressor library to download on the website.

on gearslutz.com they had this same battle, but the guy who compressed the tracks , seems like he didnt do a great job, as the compressed / eq'd tracks sounded worse than the original

http://gearslutz.com/board/showthread.php?t=71552

so i only got 800ish to spend, Liquid Mix(EQ/Compressor - SSL imitaitions)
or SSL 4000plugins from Waves(EQ/Compressor/Gate/Limiter-SSL imitation)

?????????????????????????????????????????????

I've used both. To be honest I'd save up and get an SSL Duende. After doing some work with that thing, it blew both the liquid and the Waves plugs out of the water. I do fancy the Liquid Mix tho, its quite useful for other things than SSL-style emulations. The Avalon setting are very slick, as well as the other focusrite gear it mimics.

my 2 cents.

oh think of it this way Duende = 32 channels of REAL (i.e. no modeling or convolution bs) SSL compression & EQing for under 2k.

if thats the case get the Liquid, u can make much cooler sounds than being limited to just the Waves plugins.

I havent used the Liquid mix that much in the studio yet. One of my friends has the liquid mix and let me mess around with it in live, when i was over there enjoying afew drinks. As for my experience with the SSL plugins, i messed around abit with them when i was @ GC pro.

heheh, this is the best:

BT ACID INTERVIEW

"BT: It's seamless, it doesn't crash, and it runs so awesome on my AMD machines. I do two things in ACID. I like using it as a VST host, and I use it as a compositional tool. I've got it chock-a-block stocked with my own loops and they're all keyed. I just grab three bass lines, an ACID line and a bunch of percussion, and it all loads in so fast. Initially, when [Ableton] Live® came out, it was viewed as a really competitive tool with ACID, but they're totally different. Live is great to perform with, but in the studio, I don't have the luck with it that I have with ACID. ACID is instantaneous gratification in a way that's not talking down to the user, nor is it making music for you. "

well unlike acid, the liquid mix is actually pretty useful. Then again Im a DSP gear junkie when it comes to these things. Actually, next year I'm finally gonna add a liquid mix to my setup.....then a duende when i have some extra $$$$ to spend.

its not an ssl comp, but its pretty badass if ur not looking to drop a ton of money on some good hardware-based compression.
