Just this question really!
i like the faders on the Akai, 6 just right to assign them to return tracks...but I also like the ledlights on the pads of the Korg :)

Its really a split decision...

I picked up the mpd24 cause it has more controls. The lights of pad control would be nice though, so you can see what pad is looping etc..

I can't speak to the pad kontrol, because I haven't used one. But I do have a MPD 24 and I love it. The faders and 360 degree knobs are awesome for tweaking. It is also really easy to setup and edit right from the controller itself. The software editor has been a let down for me. In fact, I haven't been able to use it at all, but the fact that it is so easily editable from the machine itself kinda renders the software a bit redundant.

I don't think you will be sorry if you go for the MPD, it has really been revolutionary in the way I work and has made Live that much more fun to use.

i'll probably go mpd, but somewhat i know i'll miss the xy trackpad of the korg...
but apart from triggering impulse (which is what i'd like to do most) and fader/knob tweaking, what else can you do with the mpd?

You can also use it as a control surface for stuff like undo, redo, solo tracks, play scene or clip, record enable etc. Once you´ve found a setup that works for you it really increases work flow.
I tried the Padkontrol in a shop once and it felt like the pads really are a bit more sensitive when it comes to very low velocity.Still i bought an mpd cause it felt like just a slight difference and i love the faders and knobs on the mpd.
Apart from that the mpd just feels really well built and solid.

I bought a padKontrol cause the lights and XY pad turned me on more than the few sliders and pots on other devices. The pads are very sensitive and you can hit the button anywhere on the pad, you don't have to be centre perfect. Just got the "MackeyKontrol" thing for it set up to which has totally rocked my world in the performance stakes.

I have just ordered an Evolution UC33E so that I can have a lot of sliders and pots to compliment the padKontrol but I always had in mind that I would go for 2 devices that had a lot of more limited features than 1 device that had a broad range of features but only a few of each.

Right now I'm torn between XY pad and Aftertouch

Don't think about the xy pad, man.

Do you want the best possible triggering? Then get the padKontrol.

Do you want more control (faders, "aftertouch") Then get the mpd24

So you can actually setup the padkontrol, somehow, so that when trigering clips, the pads light up accordingly (ie lights on when it starts, and off when it stops) ?

Please say no, i was set on the mpd !

there is no note repeat on the mpd 24, just 16 levels, and full level.
on the pad kontrol you could do drum rolls and flams using the x-ypad and holding down the trigger for your sound but, its not quantized to the beat, it sounds very realistic it just doesnt sync to the beat tho.

That's the sole drawback with the padkontrol, it DOESN'T work like that, which is a damn shame. There's loads of requests on the Korg forum demanding a firmware update to allow this (ie, setting up a pad as a toggle switch and hitting it once should light up the pad, and hitting it again turns the light off), but so far, to no avail. Which is really disappointing, as it would be incredibly useful in a live performance to be able to see at a glance which loops are currently looping and which aren't.

So basically, the korg has less additional knobx and faders :( , but is thinner and has an x-y pad :). It's also quite light too, the MPD is a little on the heavy side in comparison.

Get the MPD just got mine a day ago. I LOVE IT. I didn't realize how much fun banging out drums and bass lines on it would be high quality product I must say.
