problems with osx 10.4.8 fw audio ? try this...

Post by nonnus » Tue Feb 27, 2007 3:04 pm

hi to all

i have been trying to find out what is going on with most of the firewire soundcards that are experiencing lots of problems on mac, expecially on 10.4.8

some people have been suggesting/suggested it has to do with apple fw audio driver in 10.4.8 and waiting on 10.4.9

yesterday i found it is possible to try a different fw audio driver (although i am not sure if it really is the one that is supposed to come out on 10.4.9) and have been advised to try it out

if you want you can do the same:

The driver is available as part of Apple's FireWire SDK 23.
I am legally prohibited from distributing this driver by the terms of Apple's license agreement.
However, you can register for free as an Apple developer and download it yourself.

To register as an Apple developer, go to:

http://developer.apple.com/membership/online.html

and click the "Join Now!" button.

Once you have registered, navigate to:

http://developer.apple.com/sdk/

and click on "FireWire SDK 23 for Mac OS X". Download and install the SDK.

Once the SDK is installed, open your hard disk and navigate to Developer/FireWireSDK23/FireWireComponents/FireWireAudio 2.0.1. Open the installer file labeled "AppleFWAudio-2.0.1fc1-e8.pkg".

Follow the on-screen instructions.
Once this is done,
restart your Mac.

Tip:
as i idid not want to install the full sdk,
i just used the show package content option,
and extracted AppleFWAudio-2.0.1fc1-e8.pkg from the archive.pax.gz

if you get to try this please post you experience on this thread

thanx alot to everyone

tried and testing...

my issue sometimes takes some time to make it´s appearance,
sometime it happens every 5 minutes...

still, so far so good...
as the sound is still koming from both speakers...

one strange feeling i have is that live is playing all my tracks "slower" (less bpm) but i guess it is just my brain playing tricks on me...

There's a tap tempo widget you could use to check this. (it could be a 48k vs 44.1k mismatch?).

So, the firewire issue in 10.4.8 would explain the macbook/macbook pro difference. Could it be said any machine that is without fw800 is ok? (my macbook is fairly solid on audio).

nonnus,
what kind of computer are you using? I've had my Motu Traveler for ca. 18 months now, no problems on my old iBook G4 800 and on my two months old iMac 24". There are known issues on Mac Pros though, check the apple discussions.
best,
k

I don't produce (yet) but play techno/electro/house/disco/funk.

My music room has Alesis Monitor One mk2s actives.

good to hear, nonnus.
still ok?

i've decided to keep my audiofire 2.
i trust echo to continue working on driver/firmware updates and it looks like OSX updates will bring some joy, too...

thank you for testing!

yep

still everything ok

never had the sound going off, yet...

and just a week or less for exchange policy

so i´m almost considering testing completed successfully
i think i already had my audiofre running for at least total 40 hours without any faults... yet... 8)

weird thing is: after i installed the fwaudio driver my boot up time seems to have slowed down by quite a bit, almost like the system is trying to find something that is not there...

i feel i must join those who are waiting for a 10.4.9 upgrade.... 8O
and feel  for joking about it some time ago on another thread regarding the audiofire + mbp issues...

Please keep in mind this issue ONLY affects interfaces that use Apple's driver (e.g. Echo, Edirol, Presonus, Focusrite).

There are people using hardware with proprietary drivers (e.g. MOTU, RME, Metric Halo) that are getting wonderful results without any of these issues.

Just FYI...it's not an issue with FW on the Mac, per se.
For a minute there
I lost myself
