Trigger Finger help - simple answer or simpleton user? :)

Post by luxxury » Wed Mar 07, 2007 8:25 am

I've done multiple searches and while I've seen a number of people mention issues with the Trigger Finger I couldn't find any solution to my issue:

Basically, everything is peachy except for this irritating 'delay' when I trigger my kick/snare/hat etc. samples. There's too much lag time to properly play as a drum kit. My buffer is at 512 samples in Live and the overall latency is 30 ms so I don't think it's that. Plus I had a similar problem with my Korg padKONTROL at first but was able to resolve it by tweaking...well, I forget what it was now, but I think it was the release settings.

(FWIW I sold that and got the TF for the M-Audio's sliders and knobs over the Korg's x/y pad and gorgeous red lights).

All this to say that I really don't think it's a latency issue. But either way I can't for the life of me figure out how to test that theory by changing the release on the pads, the manual and Enigma are both pretty arcane and user-unfriendly. And if it isn't 'release' setting...well, any other thoughts as to what else could it be would be appreciated!

Cheers,

Not sure what your setup is load-wise on cpu and disk but you might want to see if this orthis sound familiar. Do you get the latency from the get go or does it worsen as your set gets bigger?

Sounds like latency to me.
30ms?? way too high. anything over 20ms latency will be noticeable. my latency is at 12ms. overall.

check for updated drivers for your soundcard.

Thanks for the speedy reply - I'm actually starting from an empty .als, to which I added 8 .wav samples, mapped them to the trigger finger and ran into the problem . The ableton CPU usage readings aren't even hitting 10%! I'm literally just hitting kick, snare and hat. No VSTs or AUs or anything. I haven't tried adding more files yet to this session so I don't know if it would get worse - it's certainly bad enough now!

(FWIW I also cleared out about 7 gigs on my hard drive AND erased everything in my decoding cache from the previous session, which was chock full of full songs to the tune of 2.5 gigs...so it's not a hard drive thing).

Again, I have a feeling its a setting on the trigger finger, it almost 'feels' like th pad is waiting for me to release it before the sound is played. I *think* this is known as the "release" setting -- i.e. 'trigger the sound once the user is no longer triggering the pad (similar to "on MouseUp" in programming-ese) but my MIDI knowledge is limited, the M-audio documentation is awful and I wasn't able to find any mention of how to test this from the posts here or elsewhere on the net. Hence my plea for help here. Does this sound like that sort of setting ('release')? Am or am I making that MIDI command up? :)

Interesting - I tried that that and it helped somewhat, kinda sorta. But it still isn't nearly as responsive as I was able to get the PadKontrol. And it's sure not able to do this:

are your samples loaded into Live's impulse?

If not and their just loaded as clips.....
check to see if ur samples are not quantised to play.... for example...
start of the next bar...

hope that makes sense..

No, they're clips - and they are not quantised. The global setting for the session is "none" and each clip is as well. The plot thickens!

so i guess the bottom line is:

1. is it possible to adjust "release" for pads in trigger finger, and if so how?

2. or might this be another adjustable thing that was alluded to in this forum such as changing setting CC 147 or 148, which is note on/off vs note on/off toggle. I looked into trying this in the manual/Enigma but it was a real headscratcher for me. It also may not be the right thing - but it also might be the key! any thoughts on this setting?

3. or is it just more fuel to the fire that padKONTROL's pads have a generally superior/less stiff reponse?

thanks you guys, i really appreciate your efforts...
