FM8 from Native Instruments is FANTASTIC! Also recommend Novation's V-station.

There has to be 5 reviews to get on the list, Zebra, definitely an excellent modular synth, has 4. Anyways, I like Rob Papen's stuff.

first of all...
OPERATOR (now rackable...!!!)
SIMPLER+live's sfx
(somewhere in the forum theres also an app to make wavetable waves which you can load unto simpler courtesy of mr. henke...)
crystal (amazing and free!!!)

and if you still want to spend more dough...
Zebra... (modern modular synth)
Albino
Arturia Moog modular (...cpu monster)
all-mighty REAKTOR
Massive (flexible routing...sequencers... awesome sound)
pro - 53 (kinda limited compared to the others but just as sweet...unlimited polyphony on an OLDSKOOL synth design...)
Discodsp discovery (very very close emulation of the Nordlead2x...you can load up the actual presets from Clavia's site)
Absynth3/4 (This is the one I would get...this is one massive beast... very different approach....truely futuristic )

me... I use my outboard gear + operator/simpler...
still planning on getting that absynth...

I'll beat Neb to the punch on recommending Imageline's Sytrus Poizone and Toxic

Greenoak Crystal, Oatmeal, and KarmaFX are amazing for free (they would be amazing if they cost something too)
3.2 GHz Windows XP, Live 7, Reason 4, FL Studio 7, Stylus RMX, Sytrus, Toxic III, Novation X-Station 49, Akai MPD24, EMu XK6, Roland MC-303, Gemini BPM5000 Mixer, MBox

Sytrus is at the top of my list, followed closely by White Noise Zero Vector.
