owc mercury external firewire drives

Post by thump » Mon Mar 12, 2007 8:58 pm

i'm in the market for an external, and i'm pretty seriously considering these guys, given their specs:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20 ... FW7250GBJ/
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20 ... 8F7250G16/

what are people's experiences with them - do they have the "going to sleep too soon/too often" issues that some externals have? are they reasonably durable? (i don't plan on dropping them alot, but...) what's the difference between the aluminum models and the other guys (aside from being tres flossy)?

any feedback would be much appreciated. thanks!

FWIW, I bought a HD enclosure from OWC , but could never get it to work. But their customer seervice was great all the way through the process.

I have one of the clear plastic ones and it works flawlesslessly. No going to sleep early problems here.

hello, my eugene brutha :) (U of O Law, class of 98!)

I was looking at these drives, and it seems that the Oxford chipsets rule. But my PC is 1394a...wondering if I need these enclosures that go to 1394b.

In any case, I'm leaning toward the LaCie drives. Would you recommend against LaCie?

why is there a $30 difference between these two drives? specs seem exactly the same...

I spoke with OWC and they say that the aluminum is newer and sells more, so there's more price breaks due to bulk purchases.

But I'm now looking at spending a bit more to get a Raid0 :

Thoughts.
