Audio Units vs. VSTs

Post by Verbal » Wed Mar 28, 2007 11:03 pm

Can someone explain the difference between AU's and VSTs? What are the pros and cons of using each?

Thanks!

I think the only noticable difference is preset handling.
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

AU is mac only. VST is both PC and mac

Logic only handles AU plugins. Cubase only handles VST plugins. Live handles both AU and VST (on mac)

Since switching to Live (from Cubase) I have found AU plug ins much easier to use. I love the way the presets are handled in Live. Way better than VST.

Like TIm said. The AU plug-ins are displayed as folders- AU presets will appear within the plug-in 'folder'. Many synths don't have AU plug-ins (usually hosting them with in the plug-in's ui). To create one from the current plug-in parameters, just hit the 'disk' icon located on the rack area it will jump to where it is being saved in the browser tree.
