Any recommendations on good budget active reference monitors? Considering Event ALP5's, Tannoy Reveal 5A, Alesis Active 620 or KRK RP5 which all seem to be around the same price point. Your comments appreciated.

Not to be a dick, but.

Budget?

What are your goals? Is this just a hobby? Or- is this someting you have to do because, if you don't, you will go insane?

I'm projecting now. Just don't sell yourself short. INVEST in your dream. Buy something you will be confident in. If you grow, you won't have to buy all over again in 6 months.

I'm drunk but sincere.

Event - precision 8's by the way.

Thanks for the replies. Am moving house so have to downsize from my K-Roks which I've had quite a few years. Was looking to spend around GBP 250 / USD 500.

Why active?
Which is your real requirement....
That it's cheap? That it's active? or That it sounds great and is cheap?

It's all in the driver.

A great driver with even a shit x-over and cabinet will be better then budget actives.

Checkout Aaron loudspeakers from Betatech.
Awesome drivers, awesome cabs, awesome x-overs...
The guy is a genius.

http://www.aaronhifi.com.au/

Seen his frequency/impedance/transient response graphs of his $1200
speakers kick the ass of $15-20k systems.

How many of these oh so fantastic monitors everyone raves about simply
because they've spent so much on them..... How many have shitty foam to
attach the cone for example? Shitty foam that lasts all of 2 years in
Australia. His have strong fabric holding them in place, will last forever,
while the cones themselves last ages if you rotate the cones a 1/4 turn
every 6 months or so.

Read and understand the post! I'm not interested A$1200 monitors. I am forced to downsize and will be in a small room.

Then get the AU$330 ones :-)
That's like half the cost of any of these active ones.

His rear suround speaks are very flat..... Tho not so much bass of
course.... The older ones have more, they were more designed as just a
really flat good speaker, while the new ones are probably a lil more high
frequency rear speaker focused.

Just find it funny when people want a budget system then go buy the
cheapest active monitors on the market with the crappiest drivers....
Instead of just getting really good passive gear with really great drivers.

I do understand active is better tho..... Just don't understand budget and
active being key requirements for most ppl.

+1 on the HS50M's......very precise, flat, lacks a little on the bottom though! RP5's were alright, great low end, but not so bright, and if I'm not mistaken, may have added some colour

Why is it no one has actually put all these monitors in the anechoic
chamber and done proper comparison graphs?

Actually.... That's what gets me bout monitor threads, that it's all conjecture.

Dunno why the OP doesn't just get a nice set of Tannoy Reveals (actives) they're in his price range for sure.

I've had my passives for a good five years now. Not broken once, and still in very good condition. And what's more, when I bought them, they were discounted display models.

NEVER BROKE ONCE I'll restate ;)
