What popped your cherry?

Show your age here.

I started DAWing it up on a program called Mastertracks Pro. There were no versions back then. You either had a program or you didn't. I used it on an ultra pimped out Mac Plus with a monochrome screen with a second floppy drive. There was no such thing as a hard drive. All sound got recorded on a slick Fostex 4-track.

For my high school graduation I got the top of the line Korg DSS-1 sampler which maxed out at 16 seconds of mono sampling and it took 4 floppies to load the full 16 seconds. I used it to sample snippets of Tom Cruise in a small Indie movie called Top Gun to impress the ladies. I'm not saying it was the bulkiest keyboard in the world but you can still catch news footage of the US Coast Guard finding an entire village of Haitian refugees floating off the coast of Florida standing on top of a DSS-1.

when i first started making music, i was all hardware. I had no computer, just a hard-disk recorder 2 crappy keyboards, some dodgy yamaha drum machine that i also used as a midi sequencer, and then a sampler....that was it.

When i finally got a computer I started out using acid pro 2. Woohoo, those were the days.....

mastertracks pro was pretty hot! I never had it, one of my partners did though.

I first went computer with performer. That's what dp was before it could do audio.

Yeah, the dss1 is a beast. For some odd reason, a friend of mine refuses to throw his out...

Digitally it would be the very first Roland VS880.

I still like some of the effects on that thing. :)

an old 86 IBM clone with 2... count them 2 5.25 floppy drives running Cakewalk 2. I had an Ensoniq Mirage Sampler, Roland Juno something, Yamaha RX-17 (I think that was the model) drum machine and a Yamaha 4-track.

First software sequencer - something I wrote on my BBC micro for controlling gear via gate/cv for a DIY modular I built, then added midi control to it when I got a CZ101.

First hardware sequencer - TB303 and TR606 combo.

First audio recorder - an old valve based ampex reel to reel - was one of the early luggable' recorders and weighed a ton - inherited it off my dad.

This was a long time ago - back in day when CZ101, TB303, TR606 were all the latest gear
Nothing to see here - move along!

An ARP 2600 that my high school band director conned the school board into buying was my first exposure to synths- 1972. The first one I owned was a CZ-101, though- 1986 or thereabouts.

First set of drums- a Rogers double bass set in 1973. First guitar- an old Harmony Rocket at about the same time.

A Studiomaster 8 channel mixer/4 track cassette was my first home studio; 1982 or thereabouts.

I didn't get into the DAW thing until 2001; Cakewalk Home Studio followed by Sonar when it was released.
