Ableton Live 6.07 / 64 BIT XP

Post by grumblenoise » Mon Aug 20, 2007 4:21 pm

I'm thinking od getting a 64bit based machine. Will Ableton run fine on 64bit?

Thanks in advance :)

All my truly geeky friends are telling me to wait until next year.

So 2008 before Ableton is 64 bit compatible? But MACs are 64 bit and it works fine on MACs so what's the big deal?

Sorry. Not clear enough. They're saying not to buy 64 bit machines yet (actually, anything super-new) until there are a few more kinks worked out.

But 64bit isn't new? It's been out for 3 or 4 years. It's a shame software developers are unable to make use of it just yet. Anyway, 99% of my plugins work with 64bit, it was just to check if Ableton worked which it sounds like it does.

Funny that Microsoft are releasing 64bit only apps in the near future.

Most commercial software is built as 32-bit code, not 64-bit code, so it can't take advantage of the larger 64-bit address space.

Live "might" install and run on 64bit OS but until Ableton release a 64bit version it will still run in 32bit mode (i.e. zero performance gain).

Even when they release a 64bit version of Live it will only ever benefit the user if the live x.x.x.exe process needs more than 2Gb of RAM.

64bit OS != faster machine

64-bit CPUs have existed in supercomputers since the 1960s

Yeah, I know. Just repeating what I've been told by folks I trust.

Cool, all I wanted to know is it LIVE runs. I don't care if it uses the full 64bit allocation table.

Thanks for your help 8)
