I don't think the dual cores draw as much power as you'd think, certainly not 2x single core (like a traditional dual processor system does). I'm quite sure the same goes for quadcores, ie. nothing like a 4x increase.
Suit #1: I mean, have you got any insight as to why a bright boy like this would jeopardize the lives of millions?
Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

the quad core has double the amount of cores in it.

A dual core should be enough to handle most stuff folks are doing. Unless someone has some stats to show running a reasonable config of VSTi/plugins for reasonably complex music (no dj stuff here please) and comparisons between the two to show difference I'd rather go with the E6750 or better yet the fastest E6850 stock speed. When are the quads going to get their FSB bumped up? If really soon perhaps I'd wait but I bet price-wise they'd be up there still.

I have been looking/going back and forth on this for a month or two now on building a new DAW/Game system. Video = 8800GTS 320M or 640M for one (no SLI), Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R (I think) as it takes both DDR2 667/800/1066 and DDR3 1066/1333 memory (either or, not both) for 4 and 2 slots respectively. So I have best of both worlds, go w/2Gb 1066 DDR2, update to DDR3 later with an E6850 CPU stock speed or E6750 overclocked to around 3Ghz.

As for cases, not sure. Same for audio, go with M-Audio gear (PCI) or some other respected/worthy manufacturer for a PCI card w/breakout box connections for 1/4", 1/8", MIDI, SP/DIF (don't use it at this time), etc...what options reasonably priced (i.e. ~$200-300 US)?

My concern is shortening lifespan of the components via overclocking. No matter how much you cool you are still stressing the components and could induce premature failures. That's my opinion of it.

im looking at getting the new shuttle barebone and putting a quad in it. looks small enough to gig with.

hope the latency is decent with external firewire cards. will prob get a lacie fw800 to help it along.

is anyone thinking about these barebones?
