How big is your hard drive?

Post by quadrant6 » Mon Aug 27, 2007 12:55 am

Does it make a difference to the system speed overall? do most people keep all their music files on the main drive, perhaps with some backups. Or do you keep a minimal amount on your main drive and then hook store on external drives/dvd or something?

I'm looking at the new imac, wondering whether to opt for the 500gb or stick with the 320gb..

not really

Use of a second hard drive for audio is traditional. You want to avoid recording to the same HD you are reading files and running your system from.

Its always nice to have more if you can afford it but I would get the cheaper/slower/smaller drive. Replace it with the best drive you can find and use the apple one as a backup and put it back in if you need to get it repaired by apple because they will "void" the warranty if you admit to opening the case.

It would be good to have a "mirrored" backup drive of your system when its stable so you can restore your system if you need to.

In my tower I've got a 160 gig that holds the OS, apps. and some data, then I have a 300 gig drive that's primarilly for data, audio, music, etc.

Personally I don't notice much of a difference with regards to speed, but it's still not a bad idea to have multiple storage spaces.

Ps. to answer the original question, the more space the better. If you can afford the bigger drive go for it. You might also compare the price differential and see if it would be cheaper for you to opt for the smaller drive and buy an external.
