Good headphones for composing (and maybe tracking)

Post by dave999z » Sun Sep 16, 2007 12:53 am

Hi folks.

1. I do a lot of writing, sound design, etc. late at night and can't make a ton of noise in my apartment so I will be working through headphones a lot. I need a set of headphones that sound good. Not ridiculously warm and flattering to the point that it won't sound even close on any other system. But I do want a pleasing sound and as little fatigue as possible, yet still with sufficient detail to hear what I'm doing. If anyone has a recommendation for some good quality but not terribly expensive headphones for this purpose, please let me know. I will NOT be using these headphones to mix on - I have monitors for that.

2. I know that for tracking vocals, etc. the goal is to have the headphones contain as much of the sound as possible. If there is a set of phones fitting the first criteria above that also does not bleed and could be used for tracking, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll get different headphones for tracking.

Thanks a lot!

Dave

im no pro at headphones, but I picked up a set of apex headphones for 40$ cnd at my local music shop for radio brodcasting.
i was acually really impressed. it passed a low end sin sweep from 160 hz to 10. I cant find many speakers that can keep an audible tone all the way through the sweep.

get these:

i absolutely love mine - use them late night all the time for hours and they never get uncomfortable - plus the sound quality is out of this world

if you have a strong sense of aesthetics, you'll really appreciate just using these to *listen* too...

+1

Sennheisers are VERY comfortable - I've got the HD555's. Great to listen to, and don't wear you down. It sucks if you're in a hot room though cause they get sticky from your 'ear sweat'.

Thanks everyone - please keep the suggestions coming. And if you could please elaborate on why specifically you like a given model, that would be really helpful info.

it was between the 701's and the 650's for me but the 701's won on price. im still breaking them in yet as [they say] they get better with age. im not sure if my hearing will be able to tell though.

Sennheiser HD-600's all the way. You really cant go wrong with either the 600's or 650's.

Good for mixing on probably one of the few headphones you can get away with it on.
