Can you imagine TOUCHING Live?

Post by alvaro » Tue Oct 02, 2007 4:46 pm

Many of you may already had noticed those 'Minority Report' projects.
I honestly think something like that is the future of interfaces.

An Interface to end all interfaces.

No more this stupid and plastic-feel bunch of midi controllers;
no more takeover modes, no more cables, and no more Lemur solutions.

Operate your sequencer host / virtual instrumentos knobs, faders and buttons
directly on your computer screen.

¿What do you think?

Oh I agree, so does Bjork.

Although she isn't in this clip she does use it on tour.

errr... yes, but i did not mean those kind of weird things.
Just a multitouch screen, maybe velocity sensed; a big one, in which you may
interact directly with your fingers (or other protuberances) onto your daily GUI
applications. No keyboard, mouse or midi controller rubbish.

State of the art of this kind of projects: http://multi-touchscreen.com

this iphone is very very large...I doubt they make pants big enough for one of these to even fit inside (unless you have a gigantic ass)...high on usability, horrible for portability

I like to eat Twinkies and Ding Dongs when I compose or do live shows. I don't even want to think about what that would do to a touch screen interface.

I can only speak about the Lemur, but that thing is rugged as hell... it also has a rubber seal around the edge, so water/pop drinks/BEER can't get in, if spilled on the surface...

Ok guys, maybe the tittle is wrong built, but you might be already used to my
awful english language :D

I opened this thread because i was very excited by the idea about reducing my
home studio to the minimal expression: one imac style compact computer with
touch screen, a pair of near-field monitors, and... that's it! I really hope this
was the future.

Look, it's ok to admit you're sexually attracted to 7-year-old girls...no need to blame your command over the english language...be proud of your spanish heritage...have some manchego, drink some wine, and touch live all you want...

touch screen is maybe interesting
but dont confuse it with that Minority Report crud

waving your hands in the air is no interface
you need friction & resistance based control
to create a gesture based performance
not frictionless arm waving by a 2 bit actor

its why some of the best sounds are created/shaped
with a few knobs, faders & piano keys

why?

because they work

that's pretty dated - there are newer ones of Jeff Han's stuff even more impressive!

I'm VERY interested in stuff like this and have been waiting for a while for it too

Subbasshead is right though - Jeff Han says it himself - we need a surface to press against - fine for multi-touch but the minority report stuff is not that usable apparently
