effects in return channel, master, or seperate per drumtrack

Post by ultrasonyk » Tue Oct 30, 2007 1:24 pm

hi all,

im curious about one thing....

just to tell you the setup:

track 1-8 audio channels, set to receive audio from the 8 drums in track 9
track 9 drumrack with impulse

effects: boogex distortion vst + tracks compressor + custom effect rack
with saturator, reverb and redux

shall i put the effects all on the master channel?
or shall i have them applied in every seperate track 1-8?
or shall i have them as return track and have track 1-8 send signal to them?
or another/smarter solution?

i have it the 3rd way at the moment, but i am having almost all effect
sends set to the max value (0), except for the kick.

thanks

am i too "noob" to be recognized on this forum?

NO?

so why the f**k does nobody answer?
this question could answer everybody in here. i assume
everybody is using effects on his productions...

my go, not THE answer to your needs;

compressor on every single channel you like to compress..

all single FX devices on a separate return channel so you can add spice to every single drum track..

plus maybe putting FX devices on the master so you can apply them to the whole track at once..

there is not one right way to apply FX, different placing will have different results, so you have to try.

If you apply them to every single channel, you have the most possibilities to tweak, but also need the most CPU.

If you put them on a send, you need less CPU, but you cant easily freeze and you can only controll the wet/dry setting individually for your 8 drums

instead of the master channel, i would use a drumbus, cause then you can add instruments, which are not effected by< the FX later.

thank god, they hear me :)

@poster

actually that's what i am doing at the moment. but that confuses
me a lot. that's why i posted this question, maybe there is a more
simple solution for all that

@dr. dub

sounds logical. well i prefer less applications, less tracks, etc....
i've a good CPU but a bad brain which freezes up with a lot of apps running :)

combining your answer to another post of mine, which is not clear yet...
8 drums on seperate audio channels or all on 1 track? counting that i plan
to use the same effects on all of the drums, except the kickdrum.
the overload just gets too high (cranky, clipping sound) when playing
with a lot of FX and some drumsounds overload the others, etc....

you are talking about a "drumbus". what exactly do you mean?

What he means with a drumbus is:
Create a separate audio track
Route all the drumtracks audio outputs to that audiotrack (instead of master out).
It's an old mix trick to compress all the drumtracks trough a drumbus to get that more ''compact'' sound.

Well,

whats the difference then with just having 1 impulse
track sending audio to master?

Definitely.

With one impulse track sending its audio to the master you have no choice but to put the same effects on each hit.

My advice is to also try and stay away from putting too many effects on the master. As you introduce other instruments you may find they don't sit quite so well with those effects.

Another solution:

Only create an audio track as a separate out for a hit if you are planning on effecting that hit differently than the rest of the drums.

Yet another solution:

Get Live 7!

i would like to, but there are no keys available for beta testing....

OK, to make it clear:

the overloaded audio/clipping/unwanted distortion when having
all on 1 track is only due to my crappy soundcard?

cause for drums i mostly have all drums with the same effects,
like for example a compressor, distortion and sample reduction.
