Do you have Live 7 yet?

I'd be interested to see the comparison.
No, I'm jobless at the moment so I don't know when I'll be able to afford the upgrade. :( Sucks too as I was almost done with some demo tunes for Live 7 using all the new instruments as well.

If someone at Ableton wants to hook me up though

Increasing USB buffers lowers CPU load considerably.

Interesting to see that the Beta 21 shows almost no performance penalty to the 7.01 Demo although it still writes Report files like all Betas before. But with a CPU load of less than 60% there should be plenty of free time left for writing those reports anyway.

Another interesting result is that the CoreQuad at 2.4 GHz runs at 28% while the Xeon Duo at 2.66 GHz runs at 30%.

Tarekith, even if you cannot afford the update yet, why don't you use the Demo for the performance test?

At least on Windows XP the difference between Live 6 and Live 7 seems to be about 1.5% more CPU load on Live 7.

Interested to see if Leopard actually helps here. I should have significantly better results than Tarekith as well as the other guy with the 2.4 machine? :?

Just for fun, Same test with 10 tracks is 70%, 11 tracks causes dropouts.

To me anyway, to failure tests are the best. You can't get any real information off of Live's CPU meter, just an approximation.

Both versions can run upto 16 tracks without regular dropouts on my Audiophile setup with Live 6 at 84% and Live 7 at 86%. But Live 7 can already drop out occassionaly with 16 tracks (differs from run to run). Both versions GUI become very chopy at 20 tracks, but Live 6's GUI stays a bit more smooth at 19 tracks. I tend to say that Live 6 allows one more track than Live 7, or maybe "half" a track.

Interesting again, a 2.4 GHz Core2Duo on Leopard shows about the same load as a 2.8x GHz A64 X2 on XP. As far as I know the 2.4 GHz C2D should roughly be equal performing to the 2.8 GHz X2, so the OS and Firewire vs USB solutions seem to be on par. That's nice to know for me because that means once I buy me a Macbook Pro I will be able to use the same sets on both machines.
