[ot] so I sittin here trying not to laugh...

Post by mikemc » Wed Dec 26, 2007 11:48 pm

....in a cafe' with free wifi. man and wife, thirtysomething with two small kids, parents somewhat frazzled from the holidays. the man says this to one of his daughters:

"memnenem,enem,enemmene. Nememmememmenem."
The kid says "No!"
the guy says, "mennmmmenemmen menem nmem menemm. Mnemmemem nemee mneme?
The kid just smiles and shakes her head.
Guy turns to his wife and says "nememnmne? Memmem memenennem?"
The wife says "I'll go get some [didn't hear the rest]
The father says to the little girl "Sit."

?? what th... I thought at first the guy was speaking some other language. No, he was speaking english the whole time, I caught just a few words as he spoke to his wife. He's got a northeastern accent, so he is speaking faster, but for some reason, he sounds only as intelligible as rendered here to me: it's like he's got some phase cancellation thing going on with the space. His family seems to have no problem with the code, but they do not speak it. It is freaking weird, they are sitting at the table three feet away, so can't ignore it.

oh shit i'm like when the Roman soldier in Life of Brian is trying not to laugh at "Biggus Dickus".

Oh shit, that was me.
Sorry about that.

Seriously, though... my wife and I have code words in English, and we also speak some Japanese, so when we're out and we're talking about... umm... bathroom stuff... we probably sound just an unintelligible.

Hadn't really thought that it might be humorous. I promise to keep it up, just to lighten everyone's day.

(of course, every once in a while there will be someone else who actually speaks Japanese, and they usually look at us as though we're being quite inappropriate... for a restaurant)
