It's up to you, there's no defined use for any of those plug ins.

using a saturator AND a compressor would be kinda redundant, although not necessarily wrong.

If you don't know what either of them do, I'd use them sparingly if at all.

sat u rate To soak, fill, or load to capacity.

com press To press together; force into less space.

If you were to compress a sound, you could then add more sound to your mix (without clipping), which would saturate the mix.

A tube compressor has no attack setting, which means that unlike Compressor, you are going to be removing a kick drum's punch... that's the downside you get with all those nice warm overtones.

You might consider using a tube saturator as a send effect, rather than an insert effect, if you want to retain some of the drum's dynamics that you perceive as "punchiness".

Or you can use a compressor after the tube saturator, dial in a good amount of compression AND use a high attacvk setting AND disable any gain compensation, to enforce some dynamics back onto your kick drum.

Is it crazy that I normally use both on my kicks and sometimes my bass? I normally parallel compress my kicks to give it a little more punch and then saturate a little after. I never have either parameter's wet/dry more than like 40%, but I feel like I get better results doing both compared to just doing one or the other.

It's not crazy at all to combine Live's devices to attain a desired result; IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. It sounds like you're using your ears to make the sound you like.
