yeah I'd like to know the answer to that one.

there may be some kind of 3rd party app you can download that sorts this out. I remember my desktop mac had an annoying habit of playing that chime sound on startup REALLY LOUD... but I found some app that disabled it so perhaps someone clever has made one to stop the laptop from hibernating when you close it?

Using your portable computer with the display closed

With some portables, you can use your computer with the display closed. For example, you might want to close your computer when using it to give a presentation on an external monitor connected to your computer.

To use the computer with the display closed, you must connect it to an external display, keyboard, and mouse. The power adapter must be plugged into the computer and to a power outlet.

To operate your portable computer with an external monitor attached and the display closed:
Connect a USB keyboard and mouse to your portable.
Connect the power adapter to the portable and a power outlet.
Close the portable display to put the computer to sleep.
Connect your portable to an external display.
Wait a few seconds and then press any key on the external keyboard to wake the portable.

[EDIT] ok I just tried it, but without an external monitor plugged in. didn't work, the MBP still went back to sleep after being woken. Perhaps the external monitor is key.

yes, to run it in 'clam shell' mode you need an external monitor hooked up along with a usb mouse/key board

I use insomnia and it has worked like a charm so far

could there be any overheating issues with closing the display while running some heavy programs?

Found InsominaX at macupdate.com -Works nicely!! I am wanting to experiment and map some sets to see how much I can do with only controllers while keeping the lid closed.

For me the answer is lots of cardboard strips and overlays for the controllers. (one for each song)

You can also use the Apple Wireless keyboard to wake the computer. I recommend running SMC FanControl if you're concerned about heat issues.

The MBP uses the rear for heat dissipation, so better check wether the air-flow is somehow obstruted by closing the lid. If not, then there should even not be too much of a problem. The lid (or better the air between the lid and the keyboard) surely will isolate some heat, but as long as the air is flowing I don't see no problem. Turning off the display could even lead to the aluminium lid being cooler and thus being able to take more heat off the main body.

But I do not own a MBP myself, so better check all these things yourself in practice.

I used to close the lid of my MBP while using an external monitor, and it definitely generates a lot more heat that way. Laptops are designed to dissipate some heat through the keyboard. If nothing else, it made the fans come on a lot sooner and that got annoying I ended up leaving the lid open, and just turning off the MBP's display (turn the brightness control allt he way down to do this) eventually, that worked fine.
