External hard Drive

Post by djtex » Sun Jan 20, 2008 1:29 am

I'm after a portable external USB2 hard drive with as big a capacity as possible. Does anyone know of a fairly rugged one that isn't too expensive?

Also, if I am using this for storing all my tracks when playing live will it matter if it's 5400rpm or 7200rpm?

Many thanks in advance.

Sorry I don't have any recommendations for you on this front, but from my own experience, I would suggest that the HD speed is well worth the investment in terms of performance as every bit of throughput you can manage helps.

Good luck!

I bought a Freecom ToughDrivePro and its 250Gb and bus powered, with a socket for an external power adaptor if youve overloaded the USB power.. Its great and pretty cheap, I got mine for around £100, don't know how much it is in the US/Europe though.

I've got a mixture of external drives. Out of them all I'd recommend the Western Digital MyBook range, good price and excellent quality. The only problem I had with them is they wouldn't always power up and down correctly with my Mac, though this was fixed by installing the WD Button Manager.

Speed isn't an issue with external drives, provided you go for a 3.5" drive then just make sure its a 7200 - most (if not all) are and they don't cost any extra unlike 2.5" drives.
