I dont think any of us want Ableton to spend their time or resources (which they could be putting towards automation in session view) on spam
we're already here, so we might as well
I'm not exactly desperate to do it myself, but if it was just a case of pressing delete I'd do it and I'd guess so would you
not the same as sending emails, I definitely dont want it to take up any of my time at all, but just pressing delete while I check messages anyway is no big deal
all the anxiety about mods abusing power is irrelevant because this is not a bout thread content for legitimate people, it is about the growing abuse of automated spam bots to ruin the Ableton forum - it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out who is a real person and who is a 'bot'
I don't know what powers moderators may have nor what moderation entails, maybe I have this wrong, but does a moderator have access to my personal details? If so, then I don't want a member of this forum to moderate if Ableton decide to go down that route. It's not paranoia, I have nothing to hide. It's just a principle.
At some point some people here piss other people off and if you happen to be a moderator then who knows how you can abuse that power.
Either have moderation in the hands of Ableton or leave things as they are. But PLEASE no forum member moderators. I don't trust them and regular posters are the worst variety because they often think they own the place.
My two bobs worth
phpbb and the Ableton site have nothing to do with each other.
This forum is simply a package that was installed on ableton.com/forum
It might as well have been ableton.com/uranus
I moderate the audiorealism forum, so I know for a fact that deleting a thread is just an extra button next to "post reply" when logged in as moderator. All the user data on this site is handled by a completely different system.
The only extra information a moderator has about a user is the IP address. And thats only useful for those threads where people are having an argument with their alter ego's. Most people make their location known and have links to their sites which contains contact info.. So people can do more harm to their own privacy then a WHOIS on their IP would..
There's one thing that should be noted though: Audiorealism.se received all the same spam that Ableton does. Only, the guy in charge of the website was actually clever enough to install a captcha that works. Ableton just installed any random old captcha..
The only change i've made as a moderator is diddly..
In 1 year, I deleted 2 threads that where from a manual spammer.
So yeah... Hooray for unmoderated forums...
This forum doesn't need a moderator. It needs somebody at Ableton whom is willing to spend more then 5 minutes on fixing this.
Lord knows we all got better suggestions then simply doing fuck-all, which is the strategy they opted for.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
I guess I registered pre captcha days (didn't know they even had a captcha...I guess I should create another forum nick) - remember when you didn't even need to be registered to post on said forum

I'd have at least 30 more posts than I do now which would put me at 4 thousands something and 30
Yeah. Wait till you get to 8000. You'll want to burn the place down. Especially on mondaysTone Deft wrote:just delete the whole goddamn forum and be done with it.
Though I think officially you already passed the 10k mark. I can only imagine what diabolical plans are brewing in your head.
We store Forge in Australia, because with all that heat he is virtually harmless.
If he were to live in England, he's probably be sniping people from the "profile" button at the top. (you'll need a strong imagination to visualize that, but if you met Forge then its much easier)
Watch out for that Timur guy. I think he's close to strangling a kitten.

Hoffman - post count doesn't mean much. look at Dcease, he's running his trap all the time and has little so say than " " to his own posts.
nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

it works - I had like 8 people in the list but I've whittled it down to 3
it works and if someone pisses you off or you're just sick of 'em there's a little [x] next to their nickname and bam - you'll never see that person's posts ever again
it's nice
Sure. If you don't question the content of a thread, then you're not much of a moderator anyway.Astral Fridge Magnet wrote:Thank you for explaining Hoffman2K. But have you ever been tempted to delete posts from people you don't like or that pissed you off? Be honest.
However, there are different levels of moderation.
You can moderate a forum to run as a forum you imagine, which is running it like a "god". And thats the kind of moderation you don't want to see.
There's moderation with the best of intent. Creating sections upon sections so all posts are categorized and inevitably moving posts all over the place. It sucks, its confusing and it usually kills the flow of a forum section.
Then there's self-moderation. Which is what we have here.
Personally, I don't believe it would be possible to delete a thread from a user I don't like and not suffer any consequences.
For one, it would destroy whatever credibility I have. And most likely, it would cause a small riot on this forum. Thats what you get with self-moderation, the people will moderate this place against any moderator that pisses them off.
So to answer your question.. Sure I'd be tempted to delete threads from people I disagree with. But I'm smart enough to imagine the consequences of fucking up a place like this. Just look at how much attention a mere discussion on the subject draws.
So the answer to our problems is a moderator who believes in self moderation. But mostly it requires the attention of Ableton to at least "beta test" some different spam blockers for this forum.

I don't get people who are shocked that there's porn bots on the forum. is it even possible to get onto the web without being hit with porn?
