Which is why I don't trust nebulae. The forum would be inundated with stupid jokes and corny pictures. Plus some people clearly dislike him and him them, so I don't think he should have that power.

High posters tend to think they "own" the forum. Not a good idea in my opinion. I think it should be solely Ableton's responsibility. While it is better with no moderators, it is true that other music sites have no links to porn, so perhaps that issue has to be addressed.
You're probably right, it really should be Ableton's resposibility, and no, I don't think Neb'd be a great choice either, as he's clearly displayed meglomaniac tendencies on many occasions, he also has a fairly large sense of humour gland which may or may not be to everybody's taste, we wouldn't ever want to burden him with that much temptation. He's in "Law" too, that makes him a shark as far as I'm concerned, you NEVER give that sort any power unless you absolutely have to.

We need Ableton to sort this out with some of their code based witchcraft.

+1 for the un-moderated forum...

That's what it's like living in a free world... Sometimes the roses smell like sh**.

But hey, there's really not THAT many pron bot posts... Could easily be much worse.

With freedom comes responsibility... Just don't click the thread.

This forum runs phpbb - probably the most used forum software in the world - there are tons of software mods that make it very hard for porn bots to sign up (but still easy for humans).

so you're saying we can't be trusted to only delete spam posts?

strange claim....slightly paranoid really

I personally would not want to see this forum moderated like that, and I certainly don't feel like I 'own' it

in fact since the porn posts have been starting to become so rampant is the first I've ever been interested in moderation at all - apart from an 'ignor user' button for the saddos who make it their mission to make everyone else as miserable as they are - and Nebulae and Angstrom solved that with the troll killer script

Yeah, I completely agree. I'm just talking about deleting porn threads that's all, it's getting really hard to check the forum at work without it looking really sketchy.

It won't happen, this more a "what if" whimsical little thread. Seriously i wish the Abes'd find a real solution though.
maybe its because youre at WORK, were youre supposed to do your job rather then browsing forums on the net?

Sorry, but that's now redundant seeing as pronbots are actually posting INSIDE other threads, see the chris cowie post refered to earlier.

I always would have agreed with you but as it now stands, innocent looking threads have become NSFW.

There's plenty of shit I LURVE browsing in the privacy of my own bedroom but wouldn't do at work. If a bot that can post within a thread is not just a one-off and if abes do nothing about it, this forum will unfortunately have to join that list/

Sometimes I actually wonder wether or not its completely bot driven. I mean it wouldn't be a big trouble to make a piece of software that, when meeting a "register" page it can't get through it alerts the spammer and he have to fill in registration (for example those images consisting of numbers and letters) and then it will go on automatically.

I actually recall i've seen and tried such software :)

But i suppose having to go click a link in an email to activate will be quite annoying for the spammer and maybe he/she will go to the next forum instead.

Another thing, i saw a spambot with a postcount of 12, but searching for the name only gave 2 posts as result. This means the last 10 was deleted but why the ... didn't they delete the user?

Would it be working of a moderator had to accept the first post from an user before its posted? I know this means a little waiting time for the user, but if they had a queue system so the first mod that logs in get this message, and if there is a few mods spread over the world that checks in often then it would probably just be a matter of hours.

Actually it is pretty annoying you can't select when you want to read about porn and when you don't want to. Are you from france btw?

this is it - that has kind of stepped it up a notch

that thread is familiar to me - and no doubt many others - in fact many people probably got the 'topic reply notification' for it

not just work, but I check the forum on my laptop with my 6 year old hovering round

FYI 99.99999% of my time at work is actually spent flat out designing ads for fucking estate agents, it's part of my karma and that's the only way i can look at it,

Every now and then, maybe on a lunch break I might check the forum or Ars Technica, Slashdot etc. I work in an open plan office with my back to quite a large amount of co-workers, mainly women. I don't have to click a thread to see what it contains, all I have to do is open the general section and there it is for all to see. I don't really bother now to be honest, I can't really be seen with it on my monitor.

Ah fuck it, maybe it's time to ditch this forum now anyway, it really isn't like it used to be, i guess the software is now so popular that the signal to noise ratio has naturally suffered. It's a shame.

ah dont be like that martyn! you'll be missed!

you've been here long enough to know that is usually true after a release but it usually settles down and there are just regulars who stick around

I think it would be a real shame to lose long time users like you over this and I really hope Ableton does something about this real soon because they must realise there are a lot of people who check it at work

But to add to the counterweight i got no plans to go away

Kami: noticed you're from norway no trouble then. Just had some problems with a user with exactly your name, friend_kami from france :)

And i also check it at work. If I sit and program i simply can't help it, i automatically check this and other forums on regular intervals.

It's not a personal dig at you Forge. Just a general comment and I don't think it is such a strange claim and there is nothing for me to be paranoid about. I have seen it on other sites where the big posters are moderators and are sometimes arseholes about it.

Frank Gambales forum is an example in point. I was booted out because I made a tiny criticism. There were other things too like severe censorship. You couldn't even write the word "arsenal" because it was interpreted as "arse". I was so annoyed by the attitude there that I now won't listen to his music anymore.

but this is why I think there need to be humans doing it

I think trying to solve this with code would be a pretty big issue if you are trying to do it without affecting the traditional free speech ethos of this forum

Anyone who was given mod priviledges here would know it was strictly for spam bot deleting - we are not talking about the kind of moderation you are quoting there, I can't see Ableton ever doing that

Maybe code was responsible for the censorship, but the moderator was human and a total dickhead.

Well, no neither have I really, it just gets a little frustrating sometimes when you can see no other way to solve something like this other than going againced something you believe in quite strongly, namely that having no moderators makes for a better forum. I've been strongly againced moderators here for years anfd finally here I am actually suggesting it.

This is without a doubt the best Music forum I've ever been a member of, some of the best discussion, argument and humour here couldn't have happened with full blown moderators. I fucking hate spam in all it's forms though, I think something needs to be done about it here and was just suggesting some form of compromise.

@forge, thanks.
