yeah, powering via usb is sometimes problematic. yes, the audio file from live should sound just like the cd. My guess is that the level of the signal from your soundcard wasn't nearly hot enough compared to one coming out of a cd player--were you patched into a mixer, or right into the speakers?

i am gonna use live to DJ with because:

the ability to totally change songs and drop loops in on the fly and use effects and what not to entertain the crowd is brilliant....i can see them happy faces again,

to have a HD with me that contains maybe 500 songs is ace...no more backbraking with two cases with at max. 140 records( i like to have as much records with me as i can ),

i can be as diverse as i wanna be.... so a heavy techno set on friday and a disco seventies set the next day is possible,

the ability to buy online mp3....saves me a shitload of money
one track costs about 1 to 2 dollar or euro
i used to buy records for 11 euro a piece

thatw what i think is the beauty of live

evryone has an angle
i use it coz i am lazy and i wanna be a very versatile entertainer/DJ
and i wanna make a comeback

sure i am just using other peoples tracks and use loops that i got from sample cd's but thats what ive been doing the last 15 years( the last 5 years have been a bit slow ) and i am pretty F** good at it

but here comes another great thing, i wanna make my own tracks and with live its so easy now for me to be crossing from DJing into music composing

so my ambition is this: create and play music, from my own or from someone else to entertain people

with live i can do it

evrythings possible

and i aint no plant

@ the guy whos gig didnt go well...read the forum about possible solutiuons and answers and better luck next time

Not a plant...I only know that I must lean tword the light...coming in the window...and the person next to me is I feel a creeping vine. Also I did once see a post from a dofodil...

Yeah, it was going through the house DJ mixer. I'll compare the levels coming out from the Remote compared to a CD player. Maybe they aren't that hot...

Your primary two limitations in your current setup are:

1) Harddisk speed. A 4800rpm drive will have a SIGNIFIGANTLY greater seek time than a 7200rpm drive, thus not allowing the drive to actually get your audio data off disk, and to Live fast enugh. Ironically many shorter loops will present MORE of a problem than fewer longer playing loops, because longer clips tend to be written sequentially on the disk, rather than smaller bits of data spread over different parts (physically) of the disk. Loading clips into RAM is a good, reliable temporary workaround.

2) USB. If your system does not act any more stable with the UC-33 disconnected, than it is safe to say that is not the root of your problems. The fact that you are using USB powered devices will not adversly affect thier performance (although it will limit thier capabilities). What will is your USB hub. Many USB hubs are manufactured with low grade electrical components, and suffer from poor quality control. Even cheap USB cables can detract from a devices functionality. I would reccomend looking into this device before feeling forced into getting a new audio interface.

That being said, I would not expect phenominal audio fidelity from a Novation midi controller/audio interface. Truth be told, as Digital to Analog Converters go these will not be high grade electronics or engineering. I am not saying that novation does not employ very talented electrical engineers, but you must consider the price point and target market of this device... Not to mention the fact that it is running on only 5v @ 500mA through a USB cable. (superior USB cables provide higher quality power conduits than the cheap ones, as the cheaper ones are often targeted @ a market more interested in self powered printers than anything else)

I've just found out and am pretty shocked....the laptops hard drive is actually only 4200rpm

That's absolutely kerrazy in a machine of that spec. No wonder it's struggling. F/W here we come.

I'd think about getting maybe an internal 7200 also - although watch the heat I'm still getting my heat problems which i think is down to that, so i've set the power settings to allow the int HD to spin down while the ext one does all the work - so maybe i've just contradicted myself just get the fw one!!!

How big an issue do you feel the heat is with the internal 7200 - the processor runs VERY hot

Your so funny Forge...
I have heard those new Hitachi 2.5" 7200rpm drives are pretty hot (both physically and metaphorically)
Regarding firewire drives and performance just look for one with the Oxford 911 chipset (also an 8Mb buffer on the drive will help with recording several tracks during playback...)
