Get ready for return to simpler times
Get ready for return to simpler times
Not sure if this has been covered on here but if you're a fan of we're-all-fucked-umentaries then I would highly recommend Crude Awakening which covers our dependence on oil and the bleak outlook on future dependence and current alternative fuel options.
Here's a few "facts" off the top of my head.
Most experts agree even Saudi Arabia has reached peak production so it's all downhill from here.
1 gallon of ethanol takes 2 and 1/2 gallons of oil to produce.
If everybody drove a hybrid we still wouldn't be any better off due to population growth and the rapid development of China.
A Hummer gets 10 miles per gallon.
The hydrogen alternative is at least 20-30 years from being viable and only if we really start taking it seriously.
With the nuclear option we would need to build 10,000 power plants to match current capacity and our reserves would only last a decade.
For solar power we would need to build a panel roughly half the size of California to match current capacity (not sure if this is just to power the US).
Wind power isn't even really a contender that could match the demand.
If you are of college age the odds are your grandchildren will never fly on an airplane.
So basically we are all screwed with no real alternative in sight or being taken seriously. It's going to be an odd regressed world 50 - 60 years from now. Luckily I'll either be dead or not wanting to leave the house anyway and just happy to have the gameshow network.
Everybody run out and make babies!

Perhaps we'd see a return to real music by real musicians on real instruments...
these guys knew how to rock the place!
come on, there are still "real" musicians with "real" instruments.
the only difference if there was no energy, is that you wouldn't hear of them, the only thing you could hear would be the guy next door singing under his (cold) shower.

What I found most disturbing was that there really didn't seem to be a heavy political agenda on this one. There was some finger pointing at the oil profiteers including the Bush administration and Saudi royals but at the same time it wasn't laid out like they are single-handedly holding us back from a promising solution. All solutions pointed to major life changes and a planet that can't support the current and future population which would have to decrease by the billions. It goes way beyond just driving a car or being able to flick on a light.
I couldn't help but think how this might cause some kind of weird super power reversal where Africa becomes the continent that all others follow. They've been living this kind of existence forever.

I suggest reading The Revenge of Gaia by Mr. Lovelock.
In the meantime take a look at this.

Who's in his forties or before will see the beginning of the new dark age for sure.
