How do you make samples cut each other off, like an MPC?
Hi
I've just been watching a beat video on crate kings, and the producer (Supreme) has used a sample to create 3 different 'riffs', or segments.
He then says he sets it so that each sample cuts the other off.
From memory, I can't figure out how to do this and can't find anything in the manual.
I'd be using Drum Racks to slice a sample and playback on my Novation drum pads. So I want the sample to play the length until I either retrigger the same sample, or hit another drum pad with a different sample.
Thanks
James

+1 choke groups in drum racks.
which manual are you reading?
Impulse - slots 7 and 8 cut each other off
for clips, in clip view hit Legato mode
put the samples into the same track and they'll cut each other off
I'm sure there's more ways...

Never heard of choke groups, will look into that. I'm reading my Live 6 manual.Tone Deft wrote:+1 choke groups in drum racks.

The clip idea is one I've remembered now you mention it, thanks. Would be interested to know any other ways for reference as well.

If you're using live 7; First, you'll want to load your samples into Drumracks.
After that's done you'll need to turn the release knob (It's in the filter section of the sample editor for each cell) all the way to the right. This will alow your sample to ring out all the way. You'll need to do this with every cell that has a sample.
Last, you'll need to set the choke groups. You can do this by setting all of the choke groups to the same number. to get there you need to first click on the "Chain List Button" once you've selected that you'll get an I-O button on the bottom left hand side of the cells, click on that to open the choke groups.
Once you set these all to the same number your samples will cut each other off and they will ring out till the end of the sample or until you click another cell with the same choke group setting.
make sense?
this is on page 229 of the Live 7 manual.
let me know if you need more help with this.

And that cratekings clip of Supreme is the clip I was originally talking about, great fun to watch even if you don't like hip hop!
