This euro/dollar thing

Post by beatpoet » Tue Mar 18, 2008 2:37 am

Euro is becoming stronger but you wouldn't know it looking at music software prices

Why is it that companies still equate euros and dollars in their prices ?

Over on the Celemony website for instance

Melodyne Plugin is

€299 for inside EU

$299 for outside EU

It's ridiculous, €299 is over $470 at todays exchange rate. How can they charge almost $170 dollars more for the same product, there should be some law against this.

Although Ableton used to have the same prices in dollars as euro they've since introduced some difference but even for Live 7 (Full Version) download

Available at $499 or €419 which equals about $660, for the same product ???

What's going on ?

It shows the problems for european companies to be competitive in the US market. If they would charge $470 instead of $299, that's too much if you see for example the current price of Mac Logic. But charging $299 would be E200 which would make them loose a lot of revenue.

I think it will take time before the market will do its usual work, indeed it is ridiculous for this practice to keep continuing. But there is a big swing in a lot of markets because of the US credit problems, looking at any commodity price (gold, oil). It is unclear to me how this situation will stabilize in 5 years time. For the moment consider getting a US bank account and buy via amazon.com in the US.

-sell all your belongings
-goto vegas and bet all on black
-win and retire with a big studio in canada

^ whuddya know, that's pretty legend...

hey beatpoet, I looked at those exact (celemony) prices and spewed too - until I realised they're not charging VAT outside the EU! I've no idea what the applicable rate is inside here but I think when you take that into account it aligns a bit more with, eh, normality.

isn't it a tax thing? technically you could get stung by customs and have to pay a duty on your package when it arrives

Hey dcease I was not refering to you, more to the women in Texas.

... actually they are not. Texas chicks only go for Rolex and expensive cars is my impression.

Anyway, my advice: earn in Euro's, spend in dollars.

I'm dealing with the falling dollar value by spending everything I have!

To save Neb a bit of hassle (although what a kind offer, this forum really is pretty good IMO)

You can also check out JRR shop, I just bought Melodyne from them using email delivery.

Loads cheaper than here.. . .

Cheers

Yes, this has happened to me. Nearly 600 euros extra for a used Allen and Heath Xone mixer I brought back from the states! :x
